Ray Stevens: The July 20th Bill Cody Interview...

Hello Ray Stevens fans!! While I was sick with left lung Pneumonia the legendary Ray Stevens participated in an interview with WSM radio's Bill Cody. The interview aired on the July 20th episode of Bill's program titled Coffee, Country, and Cody. Charlie Mattos is Bill's on-air assistant/producer and perhaps an unofficial co-host...and they're joined by entertainment journalist, Kelly Sutton.

The interview is very, very engaging with Ray in top form cracking jokes and coming up with expressions throughout the interview that are unique to him. Bill opened the show with a snippet of Ray performing "Nashville", a single Ray released in 1973. Bill asks Ray where all he's done a show. Ray responded that when he was younger, and it's something he specifically said he'd never do at his current age, but he boarded a plane and flew practically all over the globe...landing in one airport, seeing some of the sights of the city he was in, and then boarding a different flight for some place else...and it ultimately culminated in a tour overseas. The places he visited and the weeks away from his home inspired him to write "Nashville". Ray offered the remark that he feels Tasmania is Australia's version of Las Vegas.

Ray and Bill speak of the CabaRay showroom and Bill asks Ray if he's ever returned to 17th and Grand Avenue since moving his operations to the CabaRay. Ray commented that he hadn't gone back to the area since officially tagging his CabaRay as his new base of operations (the facility includes his offices, a video production studio, and an audio recording studio). Well, technically, the music video studio is actually the CabaRay stage. If Ray shoots a music video or tapes a commercial for online play the production staff incorporates green screen technology... a green screen will be placed in the background while Ray tapes his part on stage at the CabaRay... and they put in the backgrounds to the videos in post production.

Bill mentions Ray's history with Music Row real estate. Ray comments that he got interested in real estate due to Owen Bradley and Chet Atkins. At one point in time Ray probably owned 40 percent of the land and, or, the buildings throughout the Music Row section of Nashville. I remember a writer for a music magazine half-jokingly refer to Ray as the Landlord of Music Row. When Bill asked about the unique spelling of his showroom Ray credited his late brother, John Ragsdale, with coming up with spelling it CabaRay rather than the more affluent, Cabaret. Ray tells the origins of "Everything is Beautiful" and Bill brings up the recent death of Jerry Bradley.

Ray went into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2019 and one of the fellow inductee's was Jerry Bradley. Ray spoke of how his 1980 comedy album, Shriner's Convention, featured art work on both the front and back of the cover and that it was Jerry Bradley's idea to have the song depicted in comic book form on the back of the cover and have an illustrated drawing of Ray in character as Coy on a motorcycle with hotel waitress, Charlene, on the front of the album cover. When you look on the back of the 1980 album you'll see Jerry credited with cover concept. Bill brings up Ralph Emery. Ray commented about how Ralph was one of the longest running members of the Nashville Breakfast Club, an informal gathering featuring Ray and numerous people having breakfast in various places around Nashville. It's not a weekly ritual, at least, I don't think it is...but I know that Ray once remarked that it was something of a tradition and that it began by accident in the mid 1980s sometime.

All in all it's a great interview but rather than go by my overview and opinion you can listen to the entire interview for yourselves by clicking the YouTube link HERE. The interview is just under 20 minutes.

Ray Stevens: Upcoming August CabaRay concerts...

Hello there all you fans of Ray Stevens!! I hadn't been very active because of a battle I was having with left lung Pneumonia mostly all of last week. I feel completely recovered but because I had been away from my laptop for so long my fingers haven't yet adjusted to the sensitive keypad and I often find myself pressing a letter apparently too hard where it types multiple times in a row. For example if I'm wanting to type the word, back, and I'm not careful it'll appear as baackk or something like that. Luckily there's spell check to catch those types of key stroke mistakes. Ray will be in concert at his CabaRay showroom four times in the month of August. He performs every Saturday at 7:30pm Central. The doors to the showroom open at 5pm and so prior to the concert most people gather inside the piano bar or they walk around the showroom and look at the photos, paintings, trophies, plaques, certificates, and other items hanging along the walls and inside trophy cases. The main area where the concert is performed, well, those doors open at 5:30pm for those that ordered a dinner. Dinner is served prior to the concert. Those who purchased tickets just for the concert they'll be able to enter the main concert area an hour later at 6:30pm. Ray comes out on stage at 7:30pm on the dot and his concert is usually so tightly produced that it ends exactly 90 minutes or perhaps 2 hours later depending on the kind of concert. Christmas concerts often times are usually more lengthy because the types of songs are longer (ballads about the holiday) and there's usually an even more formal presentation than there is during the rest of the season. You can purchase tickets and or read all about the CabaRay showroom when you click HERE. The tabs are pretty self-explanatory: Tickets, About, Gallery, News, Events, and Dining. The Events tab is a short cut to the page where you can purchase tickets whereas the Dining page explains the dinner options and the beverages available. The CabaRay is open on Friday evenings, too, but Ray doesn't perform that night. On Friday evenings the pianist, John Jonethis, whose in the piano bar each Saturday, does one man shows from the piano bar on Friday evenings. August 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th are the evenings Ray Stevens will be in concert.

Ray Stevens CabaRay Nashville returns to KET2

Hello fans of Ray Stevens!! Out of the blue yesterday evening I learned that a local PBS station brought back episodes of Ray's country music/talk series, CabaRay Nashville. The local PBS station, WCVN, carries programming affiliated with Northern Kentucky PBS network, KET. That acronym stands for Kentucky Educational Television. There are several sub-affiliates to KET and Ray's series previously aired on, and has returned to, KET2. The difference this time around is instead of one episode airing weekly on a Saturday night they're airing back to back Saturday nights during the 8pm hour. The episodes will then repeat early Monday mornings during the 2am hour. As of now the KET2 program page for Ray's show lists episodes airing through August 7th. I don't know if this return is temporary just to fulfill some sort of agreement on the total number of repeats left to air on that specific local PBS affiliate... which is what I thought about when I seen that the episodes will be airing back to back. All of this is speculation as I have no information about such things. I'm just happy that the series is airing on a local PBS affiliate once again. I'll periodically check back on the KET2 webpage and see if they'll be adding additional episodes and make a blog post about it. The episodes began repeating last night (July 15th). It was the Reed Robertson episode...one of the several episodes referred to as a Patriotic Episode. Also, the repeats that are listed through August 7th all come from Season 4. The upcoming episodes set to repeat on KET2 include ones guest starring Jeannie Seely, Don McLean, Ray Hildebrand, John Berry and others. Episodes of the show still air weekly on Ray's YouTube channel...so you might be wondering why my excitement of episodes returning to a local PBS affiliate. Well, it's because there's typically a different audience that watches TV than those who frequent on-line video sites. When the show is airing on the internet as well as on local PBS affiliates it's covering all age groups.

Ray Stevens: Audio Diary 2

If you've read my previous blog entry I was debating with myself as to what to call this series of blog posts where I spotlight an audio track from a random Ray Stevens album. I've decided to go with the blog title Audio Diary, for now, until I come up with something different at some point. The inspiration for this series of blog posts stems from the abundance of online music sites that provide all kinds of songs and albums by Ray Stevens. I was mainly focusing on YouTube and Spotify since those two sites are the ones I frequent the most whenever I listen to Ray's songs. The audio track today is "Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right" from his 1978 album, Be Your Own Best Friend. The smooth love ballad comes from the pen of Ray Stevens and like most of his Warner Brothers recordings it was out of print for nearly two decades until 1995 when, out of the blue, Warner Brothers issued three compilation albums of Ray's recordings for the label. Those compilations are titled Cornball, The Serious Side of Ray Stevens, and Do You Wanna Dance?. The cover photos come from an international publication of artwork. Ray's photo, depending on if you have cassette or CD copies, is either found in the inside fold out cover or on the back of the CD. To date, those 1995 compilation releases are the only showcase for his Warner Brothers recordings...the actual studio albums from the mid to late 1970's have yet to get a digital download release or even a compact disc re-issue. Here's the LINK to the audio track "Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right". When you're browsing eBay or some other online store this is the album featuring the audio track spotlight, "Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right"...the vinyl album titled Be Your Own Best Friend

Ray Stevens: Audio Diary 1

Hello Ray Stevens fans! I'm not too sure if I'm going to keep the title of this blog entry as a series or not. I've titled it as such because it's the first where I highlight/spotlight an audio track from Ray Stevens. The title, Audio Diary, makes it sound as if I'm going to be sharing deep thoughts in some sort of online diary but if you're familiar with this blog page you'll know that I don't necessarily get too deep in my analysis. Some may challenge that statement. It's possible to be thorough and strive for accuracy and yet not get so wrapped up that you come across as somebody laying on a couch speaking to a doctor. So, there's no deep, deep thoughts expressed here on the blog page. It's simply a fan created blog page all about the legendary Ray Stevens...with emphasis on accuracy and enthusiasm and absolutely no criticism. Criticism of Ray isn't tolerated here. Fun, accuracy, and education about all things Ray is what I strive for. Maybe I should title this blog series Audio Track of the Day

Music listeners are getting their music through online platforms...and Ray Stevens has long been active on the internet with his music. There are all kinds of online music sites...streaming platforms...where the music of Ray Stevens is easily accessible.

The thing about online music/streaming music is there's no longer an excuse for somebody to not be able to hear Ray's songs. Once upon a time there used to be a series of excuses given by people anytime a new song or album was released: "the album costs too much for just one song", "I can't find the album in my store", "how come there's no single release?", and one of the more inventive excuses I'd come across was "I can't afford it..." even though an album that's streamed on an online platform like Spotify is essentially free. All a person needs to do is create a free account and create a username/password...and just like that you'll be able to hear all the Ray Stevens songs you want. 24/7...anytime...anywhere there's online access.

I singled out Spotify but you could just as easily listen to Ray's songs on YouTube or watch music video content from Ray on YouTube, too. The bottom line is there's no excuse not to be able to listen to Ray's songs on various streaming platforms...the financial burden on the listener isn't part of the equation anymore UNLESS you choose to purchase Mp3's at Amazon or download an album digitally on Amazon. CD copies of his recent albums are available on Amazon as well as his online music store at his official webpage.

The audio track I'm focusing on today is "Idaho Wine" from the 1973 album, Losin' Streak. The album, as you can see, turns 50 this year. A YouTube member named Randall Hamm uploaded the audio tracks from that album 10 years ago. Losin' Streak is the only studio album Ray Stevens recorded for Barnaby Records that didn't get a CD re-issue on Collectible's Records back in the mid 2000's. One reason, from my perspective, as to why it was not re-issued is that the Collectible's Records series was doing 2 albums on 1 CD reissue projects and with Ray having recorded 7 studio albums for Barnaby during the 1970-1975 time period Collectible's Records chose to omit Losin' Streak because it didn't have any chart hits on it. Barnaby issued the title track, "Losin' Streak", as a single and later one of the album tracks, "Inside", become a B-side tag-a-long in 1974 with the single-only "Everybody Needs a Rainbow". So, technically, "Inside" did reach the charts as a tag-a-long...but apparently it wasn't enough to merit a re-issue. Now, that's my opinion as to why the Losin' Streak wasn't re-issued along with the other studio albums he recorded at Barnaby. If you want a vinyl copy you can find some over on eBay. I have a vinyl copy of the album in my personal collection.

"Idaho Wine" is a clever song about a couple who aren't compatible with one another. It's not a long ballad but rather a mid-tempo song. It'll become a sing-a-long once you start to remember the lyrics. There's a song on there called "This Is Your Life" and I've often felt that the cover photo of Ray belting out the lyrics into the microphone is a reference to that particular song. If I don't spotlight "This Is Your Life" in this audio track series make sure you search for Ray and the song's title on YouTube.

In the meantime, though, click the link to hear the audio of IDAHO WINE

Ray Stevens: CabaRay Nashville on YouTube Bundle, Part Four...

Hello fans of Ray Stevens!! This is part four in my periodic blog entry series where I provide links to numerous episodes of CabaRay Nashville. In the previous installment I left off at Season 5, Episode 1 guest starring Ray Hildebrand. In this installment I'm going to feature five episodes...one of the episodes is from Season 4 and the other four are from Season 5. In case you're wondering there are still several local PBS stations that air episodes of Ray's program...but for slightly over a year now he's been airing the program once a week on his official YouTube channel. Each "season" consists of 13 half hour episodes. If you do the math, we're up to Season 5, Episode 6, meaning that 58 half hour episodes have aired each week on YouTube so far.

Season One: 13 episodes
Season Two: 13 episodes
Season Three: 13 episodes
Season Four: 13 episodes
Season Five: 6 episodes (as of this writing)

Here are the five half hour episodes featured in this installment of the YouTube bundle...

If you search the archives of this blog you'll find my reviews of each episode of Ray's TV series. When Ray decided to start uploading episodes of the show each week on his YouTube channel last year I, at first, began writing new reviews of the episodes but then I figured that it would be better to every so often write a blog entry and provide links to several episodes at once. The main reason I decided to do the bundle blog posts is because the show is airing on YouTube...available for all to see. In years past the show was only available on local PBS syndication and not everybody was able to see the show and so I felt the reviews I wrote helped those that weren't able to see the program. Now, since it's being uploaded each week on YouTube, everybody with an online connection can see it.

Ray Stevens: July 4th Music...

Hello all you fans of Ray Stevens!!! Happy July 4th... but there are several ways of saying it. Happy 4th of July!! Happy Independence Day!! Yes, I know the day is half-over but I'm pretty sure those who come across this July 4th blog entry will be reading it days, weeks, or months later when you find it among online search results. The 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day are the three days in a calendar year where the military and patriotic music and patriotic entertainment in general take center stage nationally. So now we're here on Independence Day. The United States is celebrating it's 247th birthday. The country was born on July 4, 1776.

I was born during the country's bicentennial in 1976. No, I wasn't born on July 4th but I happened to have born a number of months later. I won't say the month in 1976 but it was after July 4th and before December 31st.

Throughout the career of Ray Stevens you have no doubt heard him sing a lot of patriotic songs from time to time...songs about America and songs about the nation's military. In 1987 Ray was chosen to perform during the half-time show at the Liberty Bowl. The half-time show had a patriotic theme and among the performances was Ray's rendition of "America the Beautiful". This was a full two years before the debut of "There's a Star Spangled Banner" in 1989...written by Ray and collaborator, Buddy Kalb, the song is about an American P.O.W. in Beirut who tries to cling onto hope through his belief in the strength of America's values and the toughness of it's military. The emotional ballad made it's debut as track five on the 1989 album, Beside Myself. Ray and Buddy re-wrote much of the song two years later during the 1991 Gulf War and turned the subject matter of the song from a Beirut P.O.W. into a song about the flag, itself, by describing all of the war zones and battle fields the American Flag has seen over the centuries. This updated rendition of "There's a Star Spangled Banner" first appeared on the Curb Records Greatest Hits album in 1991. The 1991 recording isn't on YouTube...I've searched for it and can't find it. They do have the 1989 recording and here's the audio track...

Fast forward more than 10 years and we find ourselves in the early 2000s. In the latter half of 2001, in response to the 9/11 attacks on America, Ray and Buddy Kalb wrote the novelty song "Osama Yo' Mama". Curb Records issued it as a CD single, at first, with Ray's rendition of "United We Stand" as the B-side. The novelty song eventually was certified a Gold single in the first half of 2002. In the heavy patriotic mood sweeping the country in the latter half of 2001 and for several years afterward a lot of country music entertainers through their music and through personal appearances at fund raisers encouraged people to support the military...especially the soldiers who were being put in harm's way all over the Middle East. The patriotism reached something of a peak around 2004/2005...but in 2004 Ray delivered "Thank You", a patriotic salute to all the Armed Forces. The song was released as a music video, a CD single, and eventually a full length album, also titled Thank You, was released.

Patriotism and a longing for a return to America's core values...in addition to the underlying feelings taking shape in 2009/2010 surrounding the expansion of the Government bureaucracy into our personal lives set the stage for "We The People" in November 2009. The single spawned a music video...and the music video seen by millions on YouTube, in the blink of an eye, put Ray right in the middle of various culture wars and he found himself being invited to many fundraisers and political events. Ray blended patriotism and political comedy for several years in the early 2010's. Ray issued We The People in 2010 and Spirit of '76 in 2011. The 2010 album, We The People, featured all kinds of songs where patriotism and political commentary took center stage. The 2010 album also featured some previously recorded songs...such as "Let's Roll"...which had debuted on his 2004 Thank You album. Here is the audio track...

After you read this blog entry don't walk away with the feeling that these songs that I'm spotlighting are the only patriotic songs Ray recorded. I'm randomly spotlighting...it isn't meant to be a complete look at the patriotic themed songs from his career. In more recent years we have "Wrapped in the Flag" from the pen of Buddy Kalb. That one was released last year...it features Ray playing the piano and Larry Black narrating a story of a man that loves his country and how, in his early years, he was teased about the patriotism and people laughed it off and remarked how much he's wrapped up too much in the flag. The title has a twist ending...and you'll need to listen closely to the narration...

Today, Ray released the instrumental of "The Star Spangled Banner". It's the keyboard playing that accompanied Larry Black's narration of "Wrapped in the Flag" but in the video clip released this morning we hear just the keyboard playing. As you may know, during the recording process, Ray uses multiple tracks which means that instruments or vocals can easily be added or removed during the production of a recording. Since the keyboard is the main focal point in the clip released this morning it's been turned up in volume for "The Star Spangled Banner" audio track. In "Wrapped in the Flag" the keyboard was appropriately shifted to the background and the volume turned down slightly during Larry Black's narration.

Closing out this July 4th blog entry is the 1987 performance of "America the Beautiful" by Ray Stevens at the Liberty Bowl half-time show. It was an incredibly cold night and Ray is decked out in a very large fur coat. Bits of snow and the cold temperature are visual highlights. From December 29, 1987 here's Ray Stevens performing at the Liberty Bowl half-time show...

Ray Stevens sings "Cup Holders"...

Hello Ray Stevens fans!! Several months ago I embedded a video of Ray's guest appearance on the final first-run episode of Larry's Country Diner. In that episode he performed several songs...and some of the songs he performed have never appeared on any album (yet) and I know that one of them marked it's debut television performance. Ray had previously sang several of the non-album songs on an episode of Huckabee which, in case you didn't know, is a talk show hosted by Mike Huckabee. There was, however, the inclusion of one song in particular that hadn't been performed by Ray on any TV appearance before or since. That song I'm referring to is "Cup Holders". Now, when I first heard this song awhile ago when audio tracks of Ray's appearance on Larry's Country Diner were uploaded to YouTube, I referred to the song as "Cup Holders" since that's one of the phrases heard several times in the song and he closes the song with those two words. However, based on the recent upload featuring Ray's performance from Larry's show, it's referred to as "You're the Cup Holder of My Life". I don't know if that's now the official title of the song or if it's what the uploader titled it on their own. I like either title...and I especially like the performance... see it for yourselves and I know you'll love it...

Now, of course, when you watch the video you may wonder where did all of the instrumentation and harmony vocals come from? Ray is singing to a music track as most of the recording artists did when they appeared on the show. There were some exceptions... like acoustic, Bluegrass-style performers who brought their instruments and band with them... but for the most part the solo performers sang to music tracks. I love the song and I love the music/arrangement. The line the harmony singers are singing is "free the hand, free the man".

Multi-tracking is a common practice in the recording industry and Ray's employed multi-tracking for many, many decades. I'd say long before it ever became commonplace in the music industry. Multi-tracking, as it applies here, is when all of the instrumentation is recorded on individual tracks. The lead vocalization and harmonies are also recorded on individual tracks. A record producer can then add all the music and vocals or take things away during the process...or decide to use the harmony or not use the harmony, etc. etc. Ray, as you probably are well aware, has long been his own record producer, music arranger, and is a musician, too...and many of his recordings are likes works of art. As a music arranger he constructs songs, instrumentally speaking, from scratch regardless of who the writer(s) happen to be. Practically every song Ray has recorded since the mid/late 1960s, whether we're speaking of the songs he wrote or the songs he didn't write but recorded, the actual music you hear is all in Ray's control. He decides what instruments are featured in each recording and what the tempo of the recording is going to be, etc. etc. Those are just the basic things a music arranger does.

I am hoping this song as well as the others that haven't appeared on an album yet will finally show up on an album! The last album he released was in the fall of 2021.

Ray Stevens: CabaRay concerts in July...

Fun and a whole lot of entertaining goes on every week at the Ray Stevens CabaRay showroom in west Nashville. If you're a tourist and visiting Nashville then I suggest you add the CabaRay to your destination list. The showroom is just west of downtown Nashville and easy to get to. Later I'll be embedding a link to the showroom and once you visit the official website you'll find all the information you'll need. Ray performs at his showroom every Saturday night. The showroom's doors open at 5pm. When you're there, awaiting Ray's concert, you can browse the gift shop and or sit in the piano bar. In addition to the gift shop and piano bar there's all kinds of photos, paintings, and awards lining the walls. There are several trophy cases displaying the various awards and certificates Ray has received over the decades. He is a member of various Halls of Fame and has a Star on the Music City Walk of Fame. The pianist inside the piano bar is John Jonethis...and the bar is informally nicknamed the Bill Lowery High Spirits Emporium. The atmosphere at the CabaRay is light and up-tempo...and I've often described the showroom as Ray Stevens World. If you're a fan of Ray as I happen to be and you live within a few States of Tennessee I suggest you take a vacation to Nashville and visit the CabaRay on Saturday evenings. As a fan of Ray Stevens, the moment you walk through the CabaRay's main entrance, you'll get this feeling that'll come over you. Actually, I got the feeling the moment I saw the big red letters of the CabaRay come into view from the interstate. It's a feeling of euphoria, I guess? Ray will be in concert at the CabaRay five times during the month of July... you can catch him on July 1st (tonight!), July 8th, July 15th, July 22nd, and July 29th. You can read all about the showroom and purchase your tickets when you click HERE. Don't forget to explore the website once you're there. The link I provided only takes you to the Events/Concerts page. You can click on the area that reads Ray Stevens CabaRay Showroom once you're at the Events page and it'll take you to the website's home page. The home page is where you'll find the various tabs... the photo section, referred to as Gallery, is great.
