Ray Stevens: The Fabulous Entertainer...

Hello Ray Stevens fans!! Have you been checking YouTube lately?? I've been watching some of the uploaded video of Ray performing at the CabaRay this past Saturday. The uploads come from a YouTube user named sumkid01. The user's posted several concert performances from March 26th of this year. I don't know how long they'll be online but as of this writing there are performances of "The Streak", "C.C. Rider", "Gitarzan", "Turn Your Radio On", and "It's Me Again, Margaret". It reveals, as if any of you needed any convincing, that Ray Stevens remains a fabulous entertainer. The photo over on the right is from 1972. If you look carefully you'll see that his beard hasn't grown completely in so he still looks as if he hasn't shaved in several days. The thickness of the beard wouldn't show itself until 1973...if you have his album that year, Losin' Streak, you'll notice the difference in his beard on that album compared to the photo above. Then in 1975, in several photo's from that year, it's fully grown and it gave a look into how Ray would appear in public starting in the latter half of 1978. He appeared on Pop! Goes the Country and Hee Haw with a fully grown beard in 1975. How many television shows have you seen Ray Stevens perform on? While the Internet Movie Data Base is quite thorough there's no way it's entirely complete. Ray's appeared on many television shows over the decades. A lot of the television shows were not saved to master copies. Once upon a time television networks and local television stations used to wipe (erase) their recordings and tape over them to save costs. Aside from footage associated with The Andy Williams Show, Hee Haw, and Pop! Goes the Country I'd say most of his television appearances prior to 1980 have vanished...either they were taped over or the master copies are buried deep within some vault somewhere...and have been allowed to languish and possibly deteriorate over the course of time.

This is a close-up of the 1973 Losin' Streak photo. As you can see, fabulous Ray Stevens has a full grown beard compared to just a year earlier. As far as television goes...the IMDB credits Ray with having appeared on an episode of Jack Paar Tonite. Some more television credits for 1973 include appearances on The Merv Griffin Show and a Dean Martin special called Dean Martin Presents Music: Country. A year earlier he made appearances on The Rolf Harris Show and Engelbert with the Young Generation. The label Ray recorded for, Barnaby Records, was heavily promoting Ray overseas in this early 1970's time period following 1970's "Everything is Beautiful". He would have a novelty hit late in 1970/early 1971 titled "Bridget the Midget the Queen of the Blues"...peaking within the Top-5 in the United Kingdom. In 1974 he's credited with appearing on numerous episodes of a television series called Music Country U.S.A. and I've not found any documentation of that series even existing. I know he appeared on that program because I know of an advertisement that was placed in a magazine promoting his appearance. One of the frustrating things, for me, is never being able to find any of the Ray Stevens episodes of variety shows. For example...there are several clips on YouTube of Engelbert Humperdinck's variety show...Ray is credited as having appeared on episode 9 of the 13 episode series. However, there's no footage of Ray on any of the clips from Engelbert's show. The same thing holds true for his various appearances on Merv Griffin's show, Dinah Shore's show, and the Mike Douglas Show. There's several episodes of "The Tonight Show" which feature Ray as a guest and there's been no footage from any of those episodes surface online.

One of the curiosities is a program called Dream Girl of '67. The IMDB shows that Ray appeared as a Judge for 5 episodes. I had never heard of the show and I looked it up. It was created by Chuck Barris and it was a beauty contest game show. The IMDB credits Ray as a Bachelor Judge on those episodes...but he was married...so either the IMDB made an error or the television show mistakenly documented Ray as single rather than married...or it could be an error in identifying Ray as having appeared on the show. Anyway, the website has him listed as a Bachelor Judge on episodes 86 through 90. If Ray was really on that game show I'd love to see the footage!! Although I no longer write blog entries about the subject I'm always on the lookout for obscure appearances by Ray Stevens. Sometimes they make their way onto YouTube but often times they don't.

Ray Stevens: Fun and music comes your way at the CabaRay...

Hello once again!! We find ourselves on a Saturday and you know what that means! Ray Stevens will once again take the stage at his CabaRay showroom. The concert gets underway at 7:30pm Central time. Now, before the concert, one of the experiences to have is to walk around the showroom and look at all of the paintings, trophies, and photos that line the walls. There's a gift shop stocked with all types of Ray Stevens souvenirs and there's also the piano bar. The piano bar is the first thing to open followed by the gift shop. The main performance area inside the CabaRay opens up for a pre-concert dinner. There are two types of concert tickets available for purchase. One of the tickets is for a dinner and concert while the other ticket is for the concert only. Those who purchase concert-only tickets will be allowed to walk around the showroom, visit the gift shop, and lounge around in the piano bar while dinner is being served in the main performance area. Inside the piano bar is the CabaRay Wine...which is the most notable among the other types of beverages served there...since it has the CabaRay logo on it. Those of you planning on attending tonight's concert and are in the area click this LINK to purchase tickets. Now, of course, if you're planning on attending a future concert by all means click the link, too.

Yesterday was the birthday of Ronnie McDowell. In some circles within country music he was often described as an Elvis impersonator. That kind of description always struck a nerve with me because Ronnie, if people paid enough attention, actually sang songs in his own voice...and he only sang like Elvis by request or if he was performing one of Elvis' songs. He wasn't an impersonator in the sense that he never had his own style or his own voice...so I've always disliked the ignorant critics shrugging him off as an Elvis clone. He can sing like Elvis from all time periods...the younger Elvis or the older Elvis...and in this performance from an episode of Ray Stevens CabaRay Nashville, Ronnie performs "I Need Your Love". He explains that it was the first Elvis song he ever heard.

Elvis, as you could guess, had a monster hit with the song. Here in the United States it reached the Top-10 in the summer of 1959 but over in the United Kingdom the song hit number one and remained at the top for 5 weeks!! Here's Ronnie McDowell's performance of "I Need Your Love"...

Ray Stevens: 1972 performance in Vancouver of "Everything is Beautiful"...

Hello all fans of Ray Stevens!! If you've been reading his social media you probably have seen the video snippet from the first concert of the 2022 season at the CabaRay this past Saturday. Well, to be specific, his daughter posted it on her social media and it was one of those spinning videos...where the camera angle zooms in and out and flips in different directions. It was during a performance of "Gitarzan". I don't embed videos from other sources outside of YouTube. His daughter's name is Suzi Ragsdale and if you search her posts or her video uploads you'll be able to see the video I'm referring to. In this blog entry, though, I'm going back to 1972. This is a performance of "Everything is Beautiful" from a television show in Vancouver, Canada. I like the screen shot chosen for the video...showing Ray in a classic pose from that time period.

I'm going by the video description that the performance is from 1972. My feeling is that it's from 1970 or mid 1971 at the latest. The reason I say that is because the song came out in the spring of 1970 and was hitting the top of the Hot 100 by the summer...weeks before Ray became the host of Andy Williams' summer show in 1970. Once Ray was on national television each week over the course of the summer months, with this song as it's theme, the single became an even bigger selling song than it already was. However, it's possible that he was still singing the song on television appearances as late as 1972...a full 2 years after it hit. Usually when you do guest television appearances you sing your latest recording or whatever your most recent recording happened to be. There's another video on YouTube that Ray uploaded last month...in that one he's singing "Turn Your Radio On"...and he's in the same venue but he's not wearing the orange vest-like shirt. They're both from the Vancouver appearance.

The song's been in his concert set-list almost non-stop since 1970...usually the closing song. I'm sure back in the early 1970's he led off his concerts with the song or had it close to the top of the set-list since it was a recent song. I think he began putting "The Streak" and "Everything is Beautiful" as the final two songs in his concerts at some point in the early or mid 1980s.

Ray Stevens: CabaRay concerts have returned!!

Well here we are!! It's March 19th and in a few hours the 2022 concert season at the Ray Stevens CabaRay showroom will get underway. It's 4:06pm Eastern time and 3:06pm Central...the doors of the CabaRay will open in a few hours. The Piano Bar will be among the first things you'll experience once you get there. There is also a gift shop which is stocked with all kinds of Ray Stevens CDs, T-shirts, hats, coffee mugs, trinkets of all kinds, and his memoir, Ray Stevens' Nashville. I do believe that if you didn't order any tickets in advance you'll be able to purchase them in person at the box office which is located just a few feet away from the main entrance. When my brother and I attended a concert there we picked up our tickets at the box office window since I'd ordered them in advance...and if I'm not mistaken I saw people purchasing tickets there later that evening before the show. The interior of the CabaRay will also be part of the experience. There are all kinds of photos on the walls, paintings, trophy cases lined with awards. There's an upstairs...a balcony with tables situated along the railing where customers can look out over the Piano Bar with a bird's eye view. The Piano Bar is titled the Bill Lowery High Spirits Emporium. A photo of Bill Lowery is on the wall inside the Piano Bar. CabaRay concerts will take place every Saturday night for the rest of the year. On April 21st Ray will begin performing on Thursday nights as well. So, a little more than a month from now, Ray will perform on Thursday and Saturday for the remainder of the 2022 season. All of the information about the showroom can be viewed HERE. In the video below Ray Stevens sings his 1973 song, "Nashville", while on stage at the CabaRay showroom...

Ray Stevens sings "Written Down In My Heart"...

Hello all of you Ray Stevens fans!! Well, we're one day away from the first concert at the CabaRay for the 2022 concert season. Ray's spacious showroom re-opens tomorrow evening March 19th...the piano bar sets the mood and then, shortly thereafter, the dinner portion of the evening begins. If you've ordered a dinner ahead of the concert you'll be allowed to enter the concert area 2 hours before the show. If you didn't order a dinner you'll be allowed to enter the concert area 1 hour before the show, or, you can remain in the piano bar, or, you can look around and take in the art work lining the walls and view the various awards that Ray's won over the years. The concerts last 90 minutes and the piano bar re-opens following Ray's performance...and usually Ray goes into the piano bar and participates in autograph/photograph sessions with fans and performs piano duets and sing-a-longs with the showroom's resident pianist, John Jonethis. Those planning on going to one of Ray's CabaRay concerts can click HERE for more information.

A couple of months ago I wrote a lengthy blog entry about Ray's 1982 album, Don't Laugh Now, reaching 40 this year. Adding to that blog entry in this one I've decided to embed a performance by Ray Stevens of one of his singles that year, "Written Down In My Heart". I've embedded this video performance in the past but since I didn't include it in a January blog entry that I wrote I've chosen to embed that performance here. The love ballad comes from the pen of a writer named W.T. Davidson. The performance comes from a 1982 appearance by Ray on The Barbara Mandrell Show. Ray guest starred on their variety show twice. Take notice and appreciate the wonderful introduction Barbara Mandrell provided...

Ray Stevens: We're nearing CabaRay's kick-off...

Hello all you fans of Ray Stevens!! We're getting close to the kick-off of the 2022 CabaRay season of concerts. Tickets are on sale now for all concerts...the first concert of the 2022 season is scheduled for next Saturday, March 19th. A couple of blog entries ago I mentioned the months of the year that'll feature more concerts. As in the past, as the concert season gets underway, Ray adds more concert dates. For example, late next month he'll add Thursday night concerts to his schedule and from that point onward Ray will be performing concerts on Thursday and Saturday nights. A lot of the ingredients that went into making a fun experience at the CabaRay from previous seasons has carried over this season as well. There's the attraction of the Piano Bar before and after Ray's concert. The pianist inside the piano bar is John Jonethis. There's also the dinner option...it remains optional as a carry over from the previous seasons. In the first season of concerts in 2018 the dinner automatically came with the concert but since then it's been an option. Ray will no doubt be performing songs from his 2021 4-CD box set, Iconic Songs of the 20th Century, from time to time...and I'd imagine he'll sing a song or two from his current album, Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore. He debuted a new song recently called "Where Are All The Twelve Year Olds?" on Mike Huckabee's television show. His performance was uploaded onto YouTube. That particular video upload has gotten over 6,700 unique views but another video upload from the same episode...a video of Ray singing "Disorder Down on the Border"...that video upload's gotten more than 15,000 unique views. It's possible that both of those songs will be performed at the CabaRay this season. The ticket information can be found HERE

Have you all seen the official Ray Stevens bobblehead? The news of it's availability was released yesterday on Ray's social media pages. In the description of the collector's item it was said that only 30 of them are in existence. I never would've thought that a bobblehead would emerge depicting the likeness of Ray Stevens and yet there it is. It's being advertised as an item in limited quantity. In my mind I'm assuming that if they sell out that it might become an item at the CabaRay gift shop...but then again it'll probably only be available during this limited time offer so don't make assumptions that it may become available at a later date. You can read all about the Ray Stevens bobblehead when you click HERE. It would be a great gift for any Ray Stevens fan...and an item that will be among the most obscure/rare should only 30 exist and no more offered. If you look at the item it captures the current Ray Stevens...with microphone in hand and the handkerchief in the jacket pocket. In the back of my mind I was thinking if Ray might start up his television series again. This will be his first full season at the CabaRay since 2019. In 2020 there was only a couple of concerts and then in 2021 he put together a series of concerts in the last several months of the year. I wonder if Ray will be filming some of his concerts at the CabaRay and then have those edited half hours inserted into the current syndicated package of his television program. There's 78 episodes of Ray Stevens CabaRay Nashville. I've long been an online voice in suggesting more half hour episodes should be produced...perhaps 12 so it could round up the number of episodes to an even 90. Ray could hire an editing team, for example, and after enough concert footage is filmed at the CabaRay the footage could then be edited into 12 individual half hours. I say all of this because I don't know if Ray would go back and play the host/interviewer role again...in my idea the episodes would consist of CabaRay concert footage from Ray and feature no special guests. The title could change to Ray Stevens CabaRay Concerts. Well, I'm thinking out loud. Meanwhile, don't forget to click the link above to see information about the bobblehead and also don't forget to click the other link to purchase tickets to see Ray at the CabaRay this season.
