Ray Stevens: 1972 performance in Vancouver of "Everything is Beautiful"...

Hello all fans of Ray Stevens!! If you've been reading his social media you probably have seen the video snippet from the first concert of the 2022 season at the CabaRay this past Saturday. Well, to be specific, his daughter posted it on her social media and it was one of those spinning videos...where the camera angle zooms in and out and flips in different directions. It was during a performance of "Gitarzan". I don't embed videos from other sources outside of YouTube. His daughter's name is Suzi Ragsdale and if you search her posts or her video uploads you'll be able to see the video I'm referring to. In this blog entry, though, I'm going back to 1972. This is a performance of "Everything is Beautiful" from a television show in Vancouver, Canada. I like the screen shot chosen for the video...showing Ray in a classic pose from that time period.

I'm going by the video description that the performance is from 1972. My feeling is that it's from 1970 or mid 1971 at the latest. The reason I say that is because the song came out in the spring of 1970 and was hitting the top of the Hot 100 by the summer...weeks before Ray became the host of Andy Williams' summer show in 1970. Once Ray was on national television each week over the course of the summer months, with this song as it's theme, the single became an even bigger selling song than it already was. However, it's possible that he was still singing the song on television appearances as late as 1972...a full 2 years after it hit. Usually when you do guest television appearances you sing your latest recording or whatever your most recent recording happened to be. There's another video on YouTube that Ray uploaded last month...in that one he's singing "Turn Your Radio On"...and he's in the same venue but he's not wearing the orange vest-like shirt. They're both from the Vancouver appearance.

The song's been in his concert set-list almost non-stop since 1970...usually the closing song. I'm sure back in the early 1970's he led off his concerts with the song or had it close to the top of the set-list since it was a recent song. I think he began putting "The Streak" and "Everything is Beautiful" as the final two songs in his concerts at some point in the early or mid 1980s.

Ray Stevens in Canada this October...

Although the date hasn't been posted on his official site I came across an upcoming concert date for Ray Stevens scheduled for this coming October 9th at 9pm. The venue is a Canadian casino located in Orillia, Ontario, Canada and you can read about the upcoming concert HERE. Judging from the site and the photos it's a state of the art facility...housing a massive performance area that regularly converts from being a traditional concert hall to a venue that offers boxing matches (based on the photos on display). According to the page I linked to the tickets became exclusive to members of the casino on July 19th and then to the general public on July 22nd.

Presumably the audience for this event more than likely are going to be much more familiar with the pop music era of Ray's career or perhaps not familiar with him at all and are just attending due it being part of a night out at the casino. Ray's career seems to have limited coverage, internationally, once you go beyond 1979/1980...except in Canada.

There's a lot of websites originating outside of the United States that offer detailed information on Ray Stevens' career pre-1980 but typically offer little to no information on his country music and country comedy successes post-1980. Of course a lot of that has to do with the limited exposure of country music, especially country comedy, internationally, and so a lot of people abroad may in fact genuinely believe that Ray's career ended around that 1980 time period (his single, "Shriner's Convention", became a massive hit in Canada early in 1980). Canada's had a country music chart for decades and so a lot of artists from the U.S. crossed over into Canada's music scene and vice-versa...some artists that originated in Canada ended up having their biggest successes in America.

Venue: Casino Rama Resort

Where: Orillia, Ontario, Canada

Time: 9pm

Date: October 9th

Site: Casino Rama Resort

Ray Stevens appeared in Hiawassee, Georgia last night (August 1st) at the Anderson Music Hall. The concert was promoted rather heavily on his Facebook page. By that I mean several posts leading up to the concert appear in succession on his page. Posts from July 10th, July 28th, July 29th, and lastly July 30th centered around last night's concert appearance. He's appeared at the venue before...a publicity piece from June 2010 is still available for viewing on-line...in that 2010 article the author of the promo tended to balance a tight rope between factual information and somewhat hostile personal opinion of Ray's performance style. As mentioned in several of my previous blog entries Ray Stevens is currently on his Here We Go Again! Tour. The tour is named after his current comedy CD...being displayed in the image above. This tour is not the conventional night after night venue appearance for weeks on end...those days are a thing of the past...this tour is more or less a batch of concert appearances spread out over the course of the latter half of 2015 and into 2016. Yes...there's a 2016 appearance already scheduled. It's an appearance at the annual Strawberry Festival in Plant City, Florida on March 9th! I haven't mentioned it too much because the appearance is obviously months from now and tickets aren't even available yet.

According to his site the next concert appearances are in September. An appearance at the Moon River Theatre on September 12th in Branson, Missouri and then an appearance at the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on September 19th. I provided links to those venue's in a previous blog entry but I'll post them again as we get close to those dates.

On October 2nd he'll be at the SKyPAC venue in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on October 3rd he'll be doing 2 concerts at the Country Tonite Theatre in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and then on October 9th (not posted on his official website yet) he'll be up in Canada at the Casino Rama Resort (details at the beginning of this blog entry!!).

Ray Stevens in a Town near You...

The latter half of 2011 appears to be a jam-packed time on the road for Ray Stevens...some new tour dates have been announced. For those who hadn't stopped by his web-page yet I'm passing along the concert dates in this blog, too.

Given that the appearances are so far in advance indicates, at least to me, that the appearances have officially been set...but as usual appearances are subject to postponement or cancellation at any time.

A few blogs ago I made mention of an October appearance in Pigeon Forge at the Country Tonite Theatre. Ray will appear twice on the same day...obviously this means two shows. He will do a 3pm and 8pm show on October 21st.

On November 19 Ray will do a show at the Imperial Palace Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi at 8pm. On November 28 Ray will be in Canada! Judging by the traffic of my blog page I've noticed down through the years that those in Canada drop by frequently and if anyone's near Niagara Falls, Ontario on the 28th Ray will be appearing at the Scotia Bank Convention Center on two separate days. The first show will be on November 28th at 7pm and the second show will be on November 29th at 2pm. In late February 2012 he'll be doing a couple of shows in Florida. On February 21, 2012 Ray will be at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, Florida. The show is at 7pm and information can be found here. The next day, February 22, he'll appear in Lakeland, Florida for two shows at the Lakeland Center. Those two shows are 2:30pm and 7:30pm and you can get your tickets directly from their web-site here. An additional appearance in Melbourne, Florida on February 23 at the King Center is listed at his web-site but there's not a concert time listed.

In the meantime the "Obama Budget Plan" has gotten 312,384 You Tube views. Budget battles, debt, and deficit issues continue to be at the forefront of the Federal Government reaching a fever pitch the other day when several members of Congress walked out during budget talks and debt ceiling discussions. The Republicans in Congress are willing to raise the debt ceiling if certain conditions are promised (hopefully in writing!) and that no tax increases will be implemented.

Looking elsewhere "Caribou Barbie" has 413,967 You Tube views. "God Save Arizona" is at 754,049 while "Throw the Bums Out!" is close behind with 737,012. "Osama Yo' Mama" has 1,093,379 views and "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" has 1,183,865 views. "Come to the USA" is now up to 5,291,699 views and "We The People" has 4,412,345!
