Ray Stevens delivers Old and New Favorites!!

This is, yet again, another exquisite album from Ray Stevens. I have the digital release in my online music library and I have an audio CD as well. This is a follow-up to his 2025 album, 'Say Whut?', which featured a mix of comedy, social-commentary, and non-comical recordings. On this one, titled 'Favorites Old and New', we hear Ray do his renditions of several old favorites, as he calls them, such as "It Had To Be You", "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "The Look of Love", "Come Rain or Come Shine", "Just for a Thrill", and "Something". These are balanced with what he calls new favorites and those are "Savannah", "Old Carousels", "Time Machine", "Moving Out Is Easier Than Moving On", "I Guess You've Never Been in Love with the Moon", "Parakeet Motel", and "Roger". If you hadn't purchased or listened to the audio tracks yet I'll simply say that you're going to enjoy them. I love the album cover, don't you? Ray wearing the kind of shirts that I like to wear...so you know as soon as I saw the cover art for this new album that's what caught my eye first. The license plate reads 1959. On the back of the album there's a view of the back of the car and Ray in a different pose. As far as the album goes I like all the songs but a few I want to mention are "It Had To Be You", "Old Carousels", and "Roger". The latter is about famed New York Yankees player, Roger Maris. The thing that jumps out at you with "Old Carousels" will be the jaunty, jumpy music accompaniment highly reminiscent of the circus or amusement park.

Five of the new songs on here are from the pen of Nick Sibley. A lot of his songs carry dosages of nostalgia... this "Roger" recording from Ray has a baseball theme as does a song Ray recorded back in 2000, "Safe at Home", which was the first Nick Sibley song that Ray recorded. Nick wrote "Roger", "Savannah", "Time Machine", "Old Carousels", and "Parakeet Motel".

This is not a comedy album. The music on here is along the lines of pop-standards/easy listening. If you have his 'New Orleans Moon' or 'Ray Stevens Sings Sinatra...Say What??' albums, or, the 4-CD box set from a few years ago in your collection, titled 'Iconic Songs of the 20th Century', then you should be very familiar with this style of music considering that Ray chose that style for three of the four albums in that box set... the albums titled "Great Country Ballads", "Slow Dance", and "Nouveau Retro".

This latest album, "Favorites Old and New", has top-notch recordings, great production, and pleasant delivery.

Prior to the release of this album, unfortunately, Ray suffered a fall and broke his neck. The news of the injury was reported on March 29th and it was reported that he would need to wear a neck brace for at least 4 weeks and that the neck injury didn't cause any form of paralysis. Now then, with the fall and neck injury happening the final week of March, and the new album's release date being April 10th, may have called for the album's release to be postponed; but yet, along with the news release detailing the injury, it was reported that Ray and Curb Records wanted the album to be released on time and so it was released on April 10th as scheduled.

I was wanting to wait and post a review of this album once we got the word that Ray's rehabilitation was over with and the neck brace was no longer needed. However, I felt the time was right to post this review as we wait until we receive the news that Ray is fully recovered.

In the meantime take a listen to his current album. You can listen to it on the official YouTube playlist uploaded by Curb Records when you click HERE. I don't like the way this photo turned out, though. It looked worse than I feel it currently does prior to my editing it and adding color and tints, etc. but the point of the photo is to show the compact disc. The better image, of course, is at the top of this blog entry.

Ray Stevens: Lyric Video of "Savannah" arrives Today...

Hello Ray Stevens fans!! Today saw the release of the lyric video of "Savannah" onto social media. I watch video on YouTube and therefore that's the video embed that will follow this introduction. "Savannah", of course, is the first single release off of Ray's upcoming album titled Favorites Old and New. The album is being released on Curb Records and it'll become available this week... April 10th!! In some of the earliest publicity for the audio release of "Savannah" the album was intended to have a late February release but it got pushed forward to this upcoming April 10th release. There was no explanation given but here we are anyway... four days away until the album hits. In a previous blog entry I shared an image of what the album cover looks like. It'll be available as a digital download as well as a physical compact disc. I'll be sharing the album cover image again in a future blog entry but for now here's the lyric video of "Savannah" that made it's online debut less than an hour ago Eastern time.

Ray Stevens: 9 Days and counting until New Album...

We're approaching release day for the upcoming Ray Stevens album!! It's set to release on April 10th so we're 9 days and counting. The album is available to pre-save on several digital music sites and physical copies will be available, too. I remarked a couple of days ago that I was under the impression that the album was going to be a collection of new songs and re-recordings of some of his older songs. I was surprised when I visited Spotify and saw the track list!! There are 13 tracks on the album and only one song had previously been recorded by Ray at least that's what I think regarding the song, "Something". There are no songwriter credits so it's hard to tell if it's the classic song penned by members of The Beatles or if it's an entirely different song with the same title. Curb Records will be handling the distribution and with the album 9 days away I'm guessing that there will be some publicity on social media ratcheting up. As of this writing the only song from this album that's been officially released came in the form of "Savannah". As mentioned there are 13 tracks on this release. In addition to "Savannah" and "Something" you'll hear songs titled "It Had to Be You", "Parakeet Motel", "Time Machine", "The Look of Love", and "Roger" plus several more. When I saw the track list and saw a song titled "Roger" it had me wondering if it'll be a salute to Roger Miller. We shall all find out 9 days from now!!

Ray Stevens sings "Get Crazy With Me"...

Well, hello all of you Ray Stevens fans!! It's the start of a brand new month...yes, it being April 1st usually means that some radio stations spotlight comedy/novelty songs. However, in this blog entry I'm spotlighting a love ballad, of sorts, from Ray Stevens titled "Get Crazy With Me". I have written about this song before as you could've probably guessed and I've written about the 1977 album it appears on, Feel the Music. That album is the one that featured Ray as the songwriter on 9 of the 10 tracks. The lone track that Ray didn't write, "Set The Children Free", is from the pen of Buddy Kalb.

In the video upload you'll see Ralph Emery and Donna Fargo introduce Ray.. the performance is from an episode of Pop! Goes the Country. As a tie-in with Ray's song he appeared on the cover of Country Song Roundup magazine with an accompanying article/interview titled Get Crazy With Ray Stevens. I have a copy of that magazine but I don't have a photo of me showing it off. One day I'll probably get around to photographing it. In the meantime... Ray insists "Get Crazy With Me"... and so let's take a few minutes and listen to this obscure gem of a song.

Ray Stevens: My review of "Savannah"

Hello all of you Ray Stevens fans!!! I am almost certain that you've all heard the brand new single from Ray titled "Savannah" by now. It was released this past Thursday (February 12th) and I've listened to it multiple times so far. I have it in my online music library as well as an audio on YouTube. It's a wonderful performance vocally and musically...a salute to the city of Savannah, Georgia. The overall feel of the song is upbeat and it clocks in at just under 3 minutes so by the time you catch yourself singing or humming along the song is nearly over.

When you listen to the song's lyrics don't be surprised if you're thinking that there's a double meaning and that he's singing about a woman...the thought crossed my mind the very first time I heard the song and I thought to myself that there might be some sort of a twist ending. However, there's no evidence that the lyrics have a double meaning and so it remains a salute to the Georgia town. There's a line in the song where Ray mentions every town has a church and every town has a jail...and each serve a purpose. It's a clever line within the context of the recording. As I started off saying this is a wonderful music and vocal performance but that's to be expected when it comes to Ray Stevens. The twinkling piano and horn section makes me think of smooth jazz but there's also Dixieland to consider or perhaps Big Band but whatever the music arrangement and feel actually happen to be it's great to hear.

There isn't a physical copy of the single available but there's a publicity photo of the song that appears on the various social media sites. The photo as seen above captures imagery of the town...a visual tie-in to the audio recording...and until a full album comes along in April the above visual promo of "Savannah" will continue to show up online. The album that this song will be placed on will be titled Favorites Old and New. The new album will hit on April 10th. You can listen to "Savannah" on YouTube by clicking HERE.

Ray Stevens: Happy Birthday circa 2026...

Well, here we are on January 24th and you all know what that means!! It's the birthday of the legendary one and only Ray Stevens!! Ray turns 87 years young today and I'm sure most of you know that he had a mild heart attack back in late summer 2026. If you search the blog archives you'll notice that the last blog entry I wrote (August 2026) dealt with his health issues and the decision he made to retire from regular performances at his CabaRay showroom in West Nashville. As far as we're aware he's still planning on selling the venue but a few days ago news broke that he'll be attending an anniversary party at the Ryman Auditorium in February for the Gatlin Brothers. If you follow Ray's social media pages then you are also aware that in a few weeks he'll be releasing a new album titled Ray Stevens Favorites Old and New. This album being released on February 12th, according to a statement published online, will feature some of Ray's classic songs re-recorded, re-arranged with new instrumentation plus new songs. As of this writing the only song publicized is something called "Savannah". There's not been any information released as to the nature of the song so we don't know if it'll be a love ballad, a comedy recording, or an instrumental. If we're to guess by the title it has us wondering if the song will be about the town in Georgia or an event, fictional or non-fictional, that took place there. However, it's also possible that it could be about a woman named Savannah. It's something we all have on our minds and we'll all find out on February 12th when both the "Savannah" single and the album it appears on, Ray Stevens Favorites Old and New, become available.

In the meantime don't forget that Ray's current album, Say Whut?, is still waiting for you to hear if you hadn't heard it by now. Released in 2025 the album has 11 songs on there and several of the songs had become familiar to his fans through YouTube a number of years before they appeared on any album. Songs like "Where Are All The 12 Year Old's?", "Cupholders", and "Since Bubba Changed His Name To Charlene". When the album's release date was announced it was promoted by way of an audio track on YouTube, "The Boom-Boom Gentleman's Club". Now, those of you reading this blog have probably listened to Say Whut? or have highlighted specific songs and added them to your playlists months ago but for all of you newcomers to Ray's catalog of music visit his social media pages, his official webpage, or online music stores and hear what you've missed. Spotify has a lengthy selection of Ray's songs to listen to.

The 87 year old celebrating his birthday today is still holding his own on Spotify and when you factor in the fact that most of the time Ray doesn't get a lot of wide ranging publicity among what they call mainstream media it's something of an accomplishment in my opinion to annually have stats on Spotify like these. The 2025 Spotify Wrapped statistics for Ray's music...

Happy 87th Birthday Ray Stevens!! We can't wait to hear your new song, "Savannah", and the upcoming album on February 12th. Let's also wish a happy 50th anniversary to Just for the Record, the marvelous Ray Stevens album released in 1976!!
