Ray Stevens: Happy Birthday circa 2026...

Well, here we are on January 24th and you all know what that means!! It's the birthday of the legendary one and only Ray Stevens!! Ray turns 87 years young today and I'm sure most of you know that he had a mild heart attack back in late summer 2026. If you search the blog archives you'll notice that the last blog entry I wrote (August 2026) dealt with his health issues and the decision he made to retire from regular performances at his CabaRay showroom in West Nashville. As far as we're aware he's still planning on selling the venue but a few days ago news broke that he'll be attending an anniversary party at the Ryman Auditorium in February for the Gatlin Brothers. If you follow Ray's social media pages then you are also aware that in a few weeks he'll be releasing a new album titled Ray Stevens Favorites Old and New. This album being released on February 12th, according to a statement published online, will feature some of Ray's classic songs re-recorded, re-arranged with new instrumentation plus new songs. As of this writing the only song publicized is something called "Savannah". There's not been any information released as to the nature of the song so we don't know if it'll be a love ballad, a comedy recording, or an instrumental. If we're to guess by the title it has us wondering if the song will be about the town in Georgia or an event, fictional or non-fictional, that took place there. However, it's also possible that it could be about a woman named Savannah. It's something we all have on our minds and we'll all find out on February 12th when both the "Savannah" single and the album it appears on, Ray Stevens Favorites Old and New, become available.

In the meantime don't forget that Ray's current album, Say Whut?, is still waiting for you to hear if you hadn't heard it by now. Released in 2025 the album has 11 songs on there and several of the songs had become familiar to his fans through YouTube a number of years before they appeared on any album. Songs like "Where Are All The 12 Year Old's?", "Cupholders", and "Since Bubba Changed His Name To Charlene". When the album's release date was announced it was promoted by way of an audio track on YouTube, "The Boom-Boom Gentleman's Club". Now, those of you reading this blog have probably listened to Say Whut? or have highlighted specific songs and added them to your playlists months ago but for all of you newcomers to Ray's catalog of music visit his social media pages, his official webpage, or online music stores and hear what you've missed. Spotify has a lengthy selection of Ray's songs to listen to.

The 87 year old celebrating his birthday today is still holding his own on Spotify and when you factor in the fact that most of the time Ray doesn't get a lot of wide ranging publicity among what they call mainstream media it's something of an accomplishment in my opinion to annually have stats on Spotify like these. The 2025 Spotify Wrapped statistics for Ray's music...

Listeners: 971 K
Streams: 5.5 M
Countries: 175
Hours: 290

Happy 87th Birthday Ray Stevens!! We can't wait to hear your new song, "Savannah", and the upcoming album on February 12th. Let's also wish a happy 50th anniversary to Just for the Record, the marvelous Ray Stevens album released in 1976!!

Ray Stevens: CabaRay 2022 Season...

Well, hello all of you Ray Stevens fans!! A social media post, out of the blue, appeared today on Ray's social media pages. It happened to be a promo for the upcoming concert season at the CabaRay showroom. This will be the fourth season of concerts following 2018, 2019, and 2021. I don't count 2020 as a "season of concerts" because there were only a couple of them during the entire calendar year. Ray resumed concert performances at the CabaRay in 2021 and now he's announced the next season of concerts will kick-off on March 19, 2022. There's some changes this season, as in the case of the previous season, no longer will customers have to purchase a dinner in order to sit at the tables down in front of the concert stage. In times past if you purchased a dinner along with the concert you'd automatically be placed in the table seating area or, if you were a family or a group, you'd be placed in one of the red leather booths in the corners of the showroom. If you just wanted to see the concert, and didn't purchase a dinner, you'd be placed up in the balcony area.

Last season the announcement was made that customers could purchase tickets for any seat in the showroom regardless of whether they purchased a dinner (excluding the balcony area...which has always been for customers that purchased concert-only tickets). So, now you'll be able to purchase table seating without having to purchase a dinner. Tickets for the 2022 season are on sale now.

In the 2022 season Ray plans performing concerts on Thursday and Saturday nights while the Piano Bar will be in service on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The Friday night Piano Bar service is for those that want to go out but not necessarily take in a formal concert. The Piano Bar features a pianist named John Jonethis...as mentioned he'll be in the Piano Bar before and after Ray's concerts on Thursday and Saturday in addition to performing on Friday night during Ray's night off. As I mentioned earlier concert tickets for the CabaRay are on sale now. You can read all about the 2022 season when you click HERE. When you visit the site and check the Events tab you'll be able to see the calendar on the left side of the screen. Click forward on the calendar to March and you'll see that there are concerts scheduled for March 19th and March 26th, both on a Saturday. The first Thursday night concerts according to the calendar are in late April (the 21st and the 28th). From April 21st onward there will be a Ray Stevens concert scheduled on Thursday and Saturday night throughout the remainder of the year...the only changes being the months of November and December around the holidays.

Ray Stevens: 2021 Birthday Photos...

I have returned!! That's the name of a Ray Stevens album come to think of it...but I have returned to post some of the birthday photos of Ray Stevens that were posted on his social media sites earlier today. Ray's birthday is today...born January 24, 1939 in Clarkdale, Georgia. This is just one of the pictures...from the looks of the background it resembles the kind of interior of his CabaRay showroom. I'm assuming that's where the photos originated since his base of operations is at the CabaRay. I know the image of the cake isn't a close-up and so I'll be posting another photo later in the blog. The candles are on what looks like a toy carousel...the lit candles are mounted and spin around in circles, like a merry-go-round, while the one having the birthday attempts to blow out the candles as they spin around in a circle. I don't know if Ray blew out each candle as it passed by or if he, in one large exhale, blew out all the candles at once. The cake appeared as if it were a homemade whipped cream parfait cake...with caramel and walnuts drizzled on top. The legendary Ray Stevens turns 82 today...with absolutely no signs of slowing down...and why should he? His dedicated fans (myself included) anticipate each new on-line video release and each new music project. He's currently signed with major label, Curb Records, and if it weren't for the pandemic he'd be holding concerts at his wonderful CabaRay showroom. It's hard to believe that it's almost a year since everyone felt free to go wherever they wanted and do whatever they wanted without having to wear face masks or be at the mercy of local, State, and Federal mandates and edicts surrounding the pandemic.

Ray Stevens Birthday Cake; 2021

Will you take a look at the Ray Stevens birthday cake!! It looks so scrumptious you want to eat it right off the screen don't you! I don't exactly know what type of cake/pastry it is but it reminds me of those whipped cream parfait treats but that one looks homemade. It looks like bits of chocolate, caramel, walnuts, and a heavy dose of cool whip. I jokingly asked if Margaret helped make that cake...given that it has so much whipped cream. In case you're new to the career and music of Ray Stevens the 1984 Ray Stevens song, "It's Me Again, Margaret", there's reference to cool whip. January 24th is winding down now but here's another photo from Ray's birthday...

In the photo off to the right we see that Ray is closer to the spinning wheel of candles. Yes, there is a photo of that candle device over on Ray's social media sites, but I never saved it to my personal collection. In my earlier blog entry today, the official Happy Birthday celebration post, I mentioned that I can't wait to hear some new recordings from Ray as we get more into 2021. Although there hasn't been any official word released as to when new songs from Ray are to become available it was encouraging to read the message on his social media pages: "Thank you to all of the fans for your support and love. Ray is incredibly excited to share all of the music he'll be releasing this year. It's going to be an amazing 82!". I, for one, can hardly wait to hear whatever is going to be released!! Does the birthday cake make anyone hungry? My stomach's growling...or it could be my nerves...eagerly anticipated new music from Ray Stevens!! In the meantime I snapped an updated photo of myself spotlighting the Ray Stevens memoir from 2014, Ray Stevens' Nashville. I have several photos of myself and Ray's memoir...one of those photos appears in the picture time-line that runs along the right side of the page. If you don't have a copy of his memoir you can get it at Ray's on-line store when you click HERE

Ray Stevens: Happy Birthday...

Today, January 24th, marks the birthday of Ray Stevens. The legend turns 74 this year with no signs of slowing down...with a television program, RAY-ality TV, on the re-launched Nashville Network and several upcoming music releases on the horizon (based on commentary Ray gave late last year). This time around I decided to post a simple blog entry celebrating his birthday rather than a lengthy career-like retrospective. Given that he turns 74 today it's ironic that 74, specifically 1974, is the year that Ray had his biggest commercial hit single, "The Streak", with overall sales in excess of five million. Ray's official music video for "The Streak" has 2.3 million on-line views. It was uploaded onto the internet in 2009.

The local classic country radio station is playing a couple of Ray Stevens songs each hour throughout the morning. The morning disc jockey does this for other country music artists, too, and so it's always great when it comes time for Ray's birthday! "Mississippi Squirrel Revival", "Ahab the Arab", and "The Streak" were played earlier this morning. The official music video of "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" has 2.7 million on-line views. The version of "Ahab the Arab" that was played was the original, uncut version featuring the last verse where the Sultan discovers what's going on and attacks Ahab as a result. This is played out in the official music video of "Ahab the Arab" that Ray filmed for his Get Serious! movie in 1995. In the video Ray portrays himself as well as Ahab. Carol Ponder portrays Fatima. Buddy Kalb plays the Sultan.
