Ray Stevens: Happy Birthday to the Entertainment Legend

2022
Happy Birthday greetings to the entertainment legend, Ray Stevens!! Born Harold Ray Ragsdale in Clarkdale, Georgia on January 24, 1939 the recording artist, record producer, musician, songwriter, music arranger, music publisher, comedy video star, and comedian is reaching 85 today! Oh yes, the legendary Ray Stevens reaches 85 and if you're as much a fan of Ray as I am then you already know about what lays ahead in 2024. The news broke several days ago that 2024 will be Ray's final full season of concerts at his CabaRay showroom. There will be a Valentine's Day concert in February but then the 2024 season will get underway in March. I wrote about the upcoming 2024 season several blog entries ago but it was prior to the news being released that this year will be his final full season of concerts. In numerous articles that have shown up online reporting on the news the one common statement in all of them are the quoted lines from Ray where he makes it clear that he isn't retiring...but that he is winding down his concert performances. He indicates that he'll continue to record songs (his studio is within the CabaRay building) and that he's wanting to get back into production work of other recording artists. The photo of Ray that I chose to insert into the blog is from 2022. He's displaying his Musicians Hall of Fame plaque. It's a few minutes until 3am here locally and I'm almost certain that Ray's social media will have a birthday post which will invite hundreds of likes, shares, and comments. In birthday's past he'd post a video of his staff/crew presenting him with a single candle birthday cake...and being sung 'Happy Birthday'.

In some of the quoted remarks from Ray that appear in the articles about the CabaRay he mentions that he'd been in show business/entertaining audiences since he was 15. When I read the quote I immediately thought of his years on Georgia radio while he was still in high school. If you look at the pictorial time-line off to the right of this page you'll see a photo of Ray and the radio microphone. This being 2024 and him reaching 85 today it's mind blowing to realize that Ray's been in entertainment, in one form or another, for 70 years, give or take a few months. There's still a few more years to go before we celebrate the 70th anniversary of his very first professional recording, "Silver Bracelet", from 1957...but Ray is officially in his 7th decade of recording (1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s). Oh, and what a way to celebrate an 85th birthday and 7 decades of recording by witnessing your most recent music video release nearing half a million unique views on YouTube. Ray Stevens is truly unique and one of a kind. Happy Birthday!!!

Ray Stevens: The 2023 Birthday Blog Entry

Hello fans of Ray Stevens!! I have a feeling some of you reading this are here, specifically today, because you've found this fan created blog page in a general online search for Ray Stevens given that today is his birthday. If this is your first time reading this blog take a look around the Archive section and view the pictorial time-line I created highlighting moments in Ray's music career. Well, I often call it Ray's music journey instead of music career. I chose the word, journey, for the blog's title because I feel Ray's career resembles a music journey...and very seldom has Ray looked backward in the journey...and even now he's working on new recordings which I'm hoping will see release by mid-year at the earliest. Happy Birthday Ray Stevens! Ray was born January 24, 1939 in Clarkdale, Georgia. His birthname is Harold Ray Ragsdale. His mother's maiden name happened to be Stephens and when Ray entered the music business on a professional level in 1957 a record producer at Capitol Records, Ken Nelson, suggested Ray change his last name from Ragsdale to something else. The spelling of his mother's maiden name, Stephens, didn't accompany Ray's professional debut. Instead, the stage name spelling happened to be Stevens. If you look at the photo time-line you'll see that Ray was involved in music, in some way or another, since his teen years. He was a disc jockey on local radio (WGPC) and eventually found himself working for disc jockey/music publisher, Bill Lowery. Ray's roots are all over the Georgia towns of Clarkdale and Albany. He was also witness to the Atlanta music scene as a teenager and this regional locale formed the backdrop of his music sensibilities. In interviews Ray has often remarked how much he loved hearing now-classic Rhythm and Blues groups and recording artists. He's also said that growing up in that particular region he regularly heard country music, gospel music, and he loved comedy/novelty songs...and growing up in that melting pot of music styles all played on the same radio station is something that most people will never get to experience.

Since we're very early on January 24th I'm thinking that later on today we'll see a birthday photo, or two, posted on Ray's social media pages. There's usually a Happy Birthday post with a publicity photo of Ray or a brand new photo of Ray with a slice of cake.

I know that there's a discount sale today at his online store. There will be a 24 percent discount on your order total...and since it's a Birthday discount sale it's only valid through the end of the day. If you've never been to Ray's official website it's very easy to navigate. Once there you'll see the various tabs for the different sections of his webpage. You can click this LINK and it'll take you to Ray's official store. Ray's last comedy album, to date, arrived in October 2021 titled Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore. A music video to one of the songs on that album hit YouTube the same month, "Hoochie Coochie Dancer". The comedy album was Ray's 5th album of 2021...following a 4-CD box set, Iconic Songs of the 20th Century. If you follow Ray's career or have come across this blog page in the past then you'll know all about those albums released in 2021. Ray promoted the box set and the comedy CD through his social media pages and appearances on select programs. One of those appearances was on Mike Huckabee's TV program and another on a radio show hosted by Tony Orlando. That's quite a broad group of people Ray Stevens prefers to reach out to...which perfectly illustrates his varied music sensibilities and why he's reached people for 8 consecutive decades: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, 00s, 10's, and 20's.

As a birthday bonus I'm embedding the audio track of "Soap Sally", one of the comedy songs from Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore. Visit the various social media pages of Ray Stevens today and tell him Happy Birthday.

Ray Stevens: Have a Happy Birthday...

Hello all once again! I was going to title this blog entry "try to have a Happy Birthday, Ray Stevens" but then I decided to title it as it appears. The double whammy of Ray losing his wife on New Year's Eve and then, a few days ago, losing one of his music industry friends, Ralph Emery, plus several other music industry losses...asking Ray to try to have a happy birthday amid all of the tragedy and sadness sounded a bit too much and so, as mentioned, I've decided to title the blog entry with a generic "have a Happy Birthday". Ray Stevens was born January 24, 1939 as Harold Ray Ragsdale in the small town of Clarkdale, Georgia. He reaches 83 years young today. If you're as big a fan of Ray Stevens as I am then you know that he has two daughters and several grandchildren. His brother, John Ragsdale, passed away a couple of years ago after suffering a fall in his island home in Bocas Del Toro. Their mother, Frances, passed away in 1997 and their father, Willis, passed away in 2001. I'm sure that Ray's social media pages will have a birthday post today...but as one could imagine it's probably going to be low-key unlike in past years where there's a festive atmosphere in his office or at the CabaRay with video emerging of him blowing out the candles on a cake. Time is going to tell how or if his birthday is going to be mentioned at some point on his social media pages. Country radio morning shows like to mention who's having a birthday in country music and so word may get out that way...but as I said I'm sure there's going to mention of his birthday on his social media pages.

In the photo above Ralph Emery and Ray Stevens have a laugh during a 1977 episode of "Pop! Goes the Country". I posted a blog entry about Ralph in another blog series I author. Ralph was one of several major figures that played a role in the success of Ray's career. Although Ralph rarely received much credit it's largely through Ralph that, in my opinion, Ray was able to make a seemingly smooth transition from Pop/Easy-Listening music to Country music. Ralph not only hosted an influential radio program but he also hosted several music programs on television. Ralph often had Ray on his radio and television programs and the exposure it generated for Ray is incalculable...add to that Ralph's stamp of approval which carried a lot of weight in the '60s and '70s for so many country music artists.

A few years later, in 1983, Ray was part of the launch night of The Nashville Network. Ralph hosted the nightly interview/performance program, "Nashville Now", during the first 10 years of the cable channel's existence, 1983-1993. A common sight whenever the two were together...laughter. So, have a Happy 83rd Birthday, Ray Stevens! Your fans are all still here whenever you decide to return to the public eye.

Ray Stevens: 2021 Birthday Photos...

I have returned!! That's the name of a Ray Stevens album come to think of it...but I have returned to post some of the birthday photos of Ray Stevens that were posted on his social media sites earlier today. Ray's birthday is today...born January 24, 1939 in Clarkdale, Georgia. This is just one of the pictures...from the looks of the background it resembles the kind of interior of his CabaRay showroom. I'm assuming that's where the photos originated since his base of operations is at the CabaRay. I know the image of the cake isn't a close-up and so I'll be posting another photo later in the blog. The candles are on what looks like a toy carousel...the lit candles are mounted and spin around in circles, like a merry-go-round, while the one having the birthday attempts to blow out the candles as they spin around in a circle. I don't know if Ray blew out each candle as it passed by or if he, in one large exhale, blew out all the candles at once. The cake appeared as if it were a homemade whipped cream parfait cake...with caramel and walnuts drizzled on top. The legendary Ray Stevens turns 82 today...with absolutely no signs of slowing down...and why should he? His dedicated fans (myself included) anticipate each new on-line video release and each new music project. He's currently signed with major label, Curb Records, and if it weren't for the pandemic he'd be holding concerts at his wonderful CabaRay showroom. It's hard to believe that it's almost a year since everyone felt free to go wherever they wanted and do whatever they wanted without having to wear face masks or be at the mercy of local, State, and Federal mandates and edicts surrounding the pandemic.

Ray Stevens Birthday Cake; 2021

Will you take a look at the Ray Stevens birthday cake!! It looks so scrumptious you want to eat it right off the screen don't you! I don't exactly know what type of cake/pastry it is but it reminds me of those whipped cream parfait treats but that one looks homemade. It looks like bits of chocolate, caramel, walnuts, and a heavy dose of cool whip. I jokingly asked if Margaret helped make that cake...given that it has so much whipped cream. In case you're new to the career and music of Ray Stevens the 1984 Ray Stevens song, "It's Me Again, Margaret", there's reference to cool whip. January 24th is winding down now but here's another photo from Ray's birthday...

In the photo off to the right we see that Ray is closer to the spinning wheel of candles. Yes, there is a photo of that candle device over on Ray's social media sites, but I never saved it to my personal collection. In my earlier blog entry today, the official Happy Birthday celebration post, I mentioned that I can't wait to hear some new recordings from Ray as we get more into 2021. Although there hasn't been any official word released as to when new songs from Ray are to become available it was encouraging to read the message on his social media pages: "Thank you to all of the fans for your support and love. Ray is incredibly excited to share all of the music he'll be releasing this year. It's going to be an amazing 82!". I, for one, can hardly wait to hear whatever is going to be released!! Does the birthday cake make anyone hungry? My stomach's growling...or it could be my nerves...eagerly anticipated new music from Ray Stevens!! In the meantime I snapped an updated photo of myself spotlighting the Ray Stevens memoir from 2014, Ray Stevens' Nashville. I have several photos of myself and Ray's memoir...one of those photos appears in the picture time-line that runs along the right side of the page. If you don't have a copy of his memoir you can get it at Ray's on-line store when you click HERE.
