Ray Stevens: The Fabulous Entertainer...

Hello Ray Stevens fans!! Have you been checking YouTube lately?? I've been watching some of the uploaded video of Ray performing at the CabaRay this past Saturday. The uploads come from a YouTube user named sumkid01. The user's posted several concert performances from March 26th of this year. I don't know how long they'll be online but as of this writing there are performances of "The Streak", "C.C. Rider", "Gitarzan", "Turn Your Radio On", and "It's Me Again, Margaret". It reveals, as if any of you needed any convincing, that Ray Stevens remains a fabulous entertainer. The photo over on the right is from 1972. If you look carefully you'll see that his beard hasn't grown completely in so he still looks as if he hasn't shaved in several days. The thickness of the beard wouldn't show itself until 1973...if you have his album that year, Losin' Streak, you'll notice the difference in his beard on that album compared to the photo above. Then in 1975, in several photo's from that year, it's fully grown and it gave a look into how Ray would appear in public starting in the latter half of 1978. He appeared on Pop! Goes the Country and Hee Haw with a fully grown beard in 1975. How many television shows have you seen Ray Stevens perform on? While the Internet Movie Data Base is quite thorough there's no way it's entirely complete. Ray's appeared on many television shows over the decades. A lot of the television shows were not saved to master copies. Once upon a time television networks and local television stations used to wipe (erase) their recordings and tape over them to save costs. Aside from footage associated with The Andy Williams Show, Hee Haw, and Pop! Goes the Country I'd say most of his television appearances prior to 1980 have vanished...either they were taped over or the master copies are buried deep within some vault somewhere...and have been allowed to languish and possibly deteriorate over the course of time.

This is a close-up of the 1973 Losin' Streak photo. As you can see, fabulous Ray Stevens has a full grown beard compared to just a year earlier. As far as television goes...the IMDB credits Ray with having appeared on an episode of Jack Paar Tonite. Some more television credits for 1973 include appearances on The Merv Griffin Show and a Dean Martin special called Dean Martin Presents Music: Country. A year earlier he made appearances on The Rolf Harris Show and Engelbert with the Young Generation. The label Ray recorded for, Barnaby Records, was heavily promoting Ray overseas in this early 1970's time period following 1970's "Everything is Beautiful". He would have a novelty hit late in 1970/early 1971 titled "Bridget the Midget the Queen of the Blues"...peaking within the Top-5 in the United Kingdom. In 1974 he's credited with appearing on numerous episodes of a television series called Music Country U.S.A. and I've not found any documentation of that series even existing. I know he appeared on that program because I know of an advertisement that was placed in a magazine promoting his appearance. One of the frustrating things, for me, is never being able to find any of the Ray Stevens episodes of variety shows. For example...there are several clips on YouTube of Engelbert Humperdinck's variety show...Ray is credited as having appeared on episode 9 of the 13 episode series. However, there's no footage of Ray on any of the clips from Engelbert's show. The same thing holds true for his various appearances on Merv Griffin's show, Dinah Shore's show, and the Mike Douglas Show. There's several episodes of "The Tonight Show" which feature Ray as a guest and there's been no footage from any of those episodes surface online.

One of the curiosities is a program called Dream Girl of '67. The IMDB shows that Ray appeared as a Judge for 5 episodes. I had never heard of the show and I looked it up. It was created by Chuck Barris and it was a beauty contest game show. The IMDB credits Ray as a Bachelor Judge on those episodes...but he was married...so either the IMDB made an error or the television show mistakenly documented Ray as single rather than married...or it could be an error in identifying Ray as having appeared on the show. Anyway, the website has him listed as a Bachelor Judge on episodes 86 through 90. If Ray was really on that game show I'd love to see the footage!! Although I no longer write blog entries about the subject I'm always on the lookout for obscure appearances by Ray Stevens. Sometimes they make their way onto YouTube but often times they don't.

  1. Another great blog of Ray Stevens! Thank you. I had a long comment I wrote, but apparently I lost it? Will be back later to try again.

    1. I'm glad you liked reading it! I hadn't done a blog entry lately where I focused on Ray's television appearances and the lack of footage so I decided to come up with one. I wish we could simply type in any TV show that we know he appeared on in the past and have the capability of watching the television show in the search results but it's not that simple. I also wish the websites that exist which proclaim to have chronological listings of episodes from a television series would actually have detailed information. I was at a website the other day which promoted that they had every episode of "Pop! Goes the Country" listed and yet when I opened the website all they had were air-dates. No information of the guests or what the guests sang. I was wanting to have a list of all the episodes of that show which had Ray Stevens as a guest along with what he sang. I don't have comment alerts sent to my e-mail anymore so I wasn't aware of a comment left here until just now. I'm anxiously awaiting whatever new from Ray will be released this year.
