Ray Stevens: Spotify Digital Single Release...

Hello fans of Ray Stevens!! Well, take a look over there at what I came across on the internet today. A fellow fan of Ray's alerted me that Spotify had a studio recording of the Bubba/Charlene comedy song available to listen to. Several months ago I shared with you all an audio performance of Ray from Larry's Country Diner singing the song. Spotify as well as Amazon both have the recently released studio recording. Now, as you all know, Amazon sells their digital download singles for 99 cents (or more) whereas Spotify provides the audio content free of charge. As you can see from the photo the official title of the song is "Since Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene". I don't know the reason for attaching the word, since, to the official title since all this time we fans of Ray Stevens have been calling it "Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene". I love the studio recording, too. Some may prefer the recording from the TV show since it contains elements of reaction from the studio audience, etc., but it's the studio recording that sounds more crisp and sharp. One of the things I took note of was the record label. In what I call the fine print it credits CabaRay Records. This caught my eye since he's been signed to Curb Records since 2020. I have recurring correspondence on social media with Ray's online crew, as I call them, and I was under the impression that Ray would be issuing music on Curb Records well into the decade so it caught me by surprise that the website credits CabaRay Records rather than Curb. It's purely topical comedy blending with southern comedy. Southern comedy is aan under-appreciated and, critically, a much maligned form of comedy given it's simple, direct approach without the gloss of sophistication or urbanity.

Another thing that caught my eye while over on Spotify was this particular Mp3 single. It and "Since Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene" were both added to Spotify on August 30th. I listened to it and to my ears I couldn't tell any vocal difference between it and the recording that appears on his 2014 gospel album. "If Jesus Is a Stranger" is the song promoted heavily from the Gospel Collection album released on the Gaither label. The song comes from the pen of Don Cusic. I don't know why it's been re-released/re-issued nearly 10 years later but it has...and it's on the CabaRay Records label but it doesn't sound like a new recording to me. So, as mentioned, both of these digital singles were listed available on August 30th. As you can see from the photos they were from the same photo session. As of this writing there hasn't been any online information from Ray's various social media pages about either of these two digital singles being available. My guess is they want the fans to find the songs on their own, organically, rather than pushing their availability too soon. In online media anything that's found organically tends to carry a little more weight than people finding something through heavy publicity. When something is found organically, in theory, that allows a record company or recording artist know that people are searching for your online content on their own without being nudged or persuaded to do so.

Although there hasn't been much discussion about those digital download releases what did make a lot of news when it comes to Ray Stevens was in the real estate section of Tennessee's online newspapers. If you're a dedicated fan of Ray then you'll know his secondary interest is real estate and on more than one occasion he's remarked that he likes architecture and purchasing houses, fixing them up, and re-selling them so much that he briefly thought of going to Georgia Tech but decided to pursue his music interests and enrolled in Georgia State.

Down through the decades reporters nicknamed him, at various times, the landlord of Music Row because at one time he owned a lot of property and rented it, or, sold it to various entertainment conglomerates. The news of Ray putting up his residence for sale hit a couple of days ago. The news came as a shock to me because, if I recall correctly, the house was purchased because it would be within driving distance to the CabaRay showroom, which was in it's planning stages, when Ray purchased the house. We don't know, yet, if he's purchased a house nearby or if he's moved out of the area but then if he did that it wouldn't have him within reasonable driving distance of the CabaRay. He purchased the house for a whole lot less than the selling price being asked for now...but that's typical of anything that's bought and sold. You hope to sell something for a higher amount than what you paid for it.

Don't forget... you can listen on Spotify or purchase on Amazon.. "Since Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene"...

Ray Stevens: Larry's Country Diner final episode nearing 100,000 unique views...

Hello once again all you fans of Ray Stevens! I was doing some browsing over on YouTube and my eyes caught the unique view totals for the final episode of Larry's Country Diner. The series aired it's final first-run episode in the latter half of 2022 and Ray had the honor of being the program's final guest. The final episode with a guest star was followed by a clip-filled retrospective of the program. The episode was uploaded onto the YouTube channel of Larry's show earlier in March of this year and as of this writing the unique view total is 95,771. I am certain that it will reach 100,000 unique views in time but perhaps with my focusing on that episode in this blog post it'll reach that milestone sooner rather than later this year.

The episode had aired on television back in August of 2022...but it didn't find it's way onto YouTube until March 2023. In the episode Ray sings a couple of songs that haven't been put on any album yet and he also sang a song from and spoke of his 2021 comedy album, Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore. In the episode Ray sings "The Gambler and The Octopus", "Cup Holders", "Where Are All The 12 Year Old's?", and "Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene". The latter song, if you check the details of the video of the final episode of Larry's show once you visit YouTube, curiously refers to it as "Homecoming Queen" even though Larry's YouTube channel had previously uploaded the performance as a stand-alone under the "Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene" title. The upload of that one performance has received more than 50,000 unique views... whereas the full episode containing that song has over 95,000 unique views to date...

Ray Stevens: "Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene" update...

Hello fans of Ray Stevens!! You more than likely aren't going to hear much about it from what they call the mainstream media but Ray has quietly racked up 2.2 million plays of his performance on Larry's Country Diner of "Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene". The statistics come from the social media platform, Facebook. The Larry's Country Diner page over there has a video page and Ray's performance is by far the most watched. It was uploaded to Larry's page back on June 8. The song is a combination of satire, social commentary, comedy...with common sense battling a forced, bizarre alternate universe that the country finds itself in. The audio recording of "Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene", on YouTube, has racked up more than 32,000 unique views since it was uploaded. The full episode of Larry's Country Diner guest starring Ray Stevens, as of this writing, has more than 83,000 unique views. I'm not going to embed the video performance...rather, I'll embed the audio from the TV appearance...

As of now there still isn't any word on when the new songs Ray performed on that episode will become available on an album. Given the way music is heard/discovered there might not even be a future album.. the songs could simply exist as audio tracks on sites like YouTube, Spotify, etc. I hope that isn't the case...yes, I'm old fashioned and love full albums of songs being released on an actual CD rather than simply visiting some online music site and listening that way. Sure, the online way is convenient but I like officially released hardcopy discs as back-up just in case of internet glitches or some music site goes offline. I bet people don't think of that...if a site that contains all your music vanishes from the internet it'll all be gone...so it's always smart to have the music on a CD that a record company has issued. If a record company doesn't offer a CD then download the songs onto a blank CD, of course. The idea of having your favorite songs stored away in some online file, either it be on a computer or a cell phone, is mystifying to me. I know you'll love the song...another great one from legendary Ray Stevens!

Ray Stevens: Larry's Country Diner 2022 appearance...

Hello fans of Ray Stevens!! RFD-TV recently (last night) aired the Ray Stevens episode of Larry's Country Diner that originally was broadcast back in October 2022. The episode happened to be the final first-run episode of the series. I was not aware that the episode was going to be re-airing and so when I got home from work Thursday night and began checking various online sites that I visit I learned that Ray's episode had aired yesterday evening.

I did a program guide search and learned that it'll re-air again a couple more times over the weekend. I set my DVR to tape the April 1st 11pm airing...but then I found out that the full episode had been uploaded on the official Larry's Country Diner YouTube page. So, what I plan on doing, is embedding the video in this blog entry for those of you that want to watch it online and then watch it myself Saturday night when I get home from work. I know the song selections due to their having been uploaded to several music streaming sites...but the interview portions and the overall atmosphere of the show is something you receive when you watch the show in it's entirety.

Some of the songs Ray sings on this episode are: "Cup Holders", "Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene", and "Where Are All The 12 Year Old's?". As I watch the show I'll be taking some notes and then write out my official review/overview of the episode in a future blog entry. In the meantime here's the last first-run episode of Larry's Country Diner...with Ray Stevens as the special guest...

Ray Stevens: Ray's Country Diner Audio Performances on Spotify

Hello Ray Stevens fans!! If you recall some of my recent blog entries I've been relaying information about his recent appearance on Larry's Country Diner. I've shared a YouTube video that was uploaded onto a phone and shared on YouTube of Ray singing "When Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene". I've also made mention of some of the other songs Ray performed during his appearance. Spotify has the audio performances of the songs he recently sang on Larry's Country Diner. There's "The Gambler and the Octopus", "Where Are All The 12 Year Old's?", "When Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene", and "Cup Holders". The audio performances from Larry's show are identifiable by Ray's image, the title of the song, and the logo of Larry's Country Diner written above the screen cap of Ray. In addition to their Spotify appearance they've also been uploaded onto YouTube and it's the embeds from that particular site which show up in this blog entry.

Here's the embedded audio performance of the sensational "Cup Holders"...a twist on the romantic love ballad and like nothing you've ever heard before...

Here's a better audio quality of "When Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene"...

As of this writing I do not know when or if any of these songs will end up on any album. There's another song, "It's My Job", that he's been performing but has yet to officially record it. He sang it on an episode of his CabaRay Nashville television show. The emergence of unheard of songs by way of his recent appearance on Larry's TV show is something rare for Ray Stevens...meaning that he usually doesn't fill up his appearances with songs a general public or even the fanbase might not be familiar with and so to spotlight several yet to be recorded songs on national TV is, like I mentioned, rare...and of course it has me thinking a new album may soon come along (early in 2023 most likely).

Ray Stevens: Have You Heard the New Songs?

Hello Ray Stevens fans!! I had it planned to tape the RFD television show, Larry's Country Diner, last night when my DVR malfunctioned. I got home from work last night and immediately flipped on the TV and went to my DVR menu and seen that the episode I scheduled to have recorded didn't record! I was furious because I was expecting to see the episode when I arrived home from work...and it wasn't recorded. I later discovered that my TV hadn't been updated...we get periodic software update reminders...and obviously I had forgotten to update the software the last time I was watching TV and so I scheduled the DVR to record and it confirmed the episode would record but yet, as mentioned, it didn't. I frantically searched online for any sort of content from the show.

Now, a few days ago, someone on YouTube uploaded a performance of Ray from Larry's Country Diner. The episode, which originally aired Thursday night was reran Saturday night...it's the Saturday night rerun I attempted to record. Anyway, video of Ray singing "When Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene" emerged on YouTube the other day. The performance comes from someone's TV set...they recorded the song on their cell phone and then uploaded the video to YouTube. I don't prefer to embed video content from those outside of Ray's official YouTube channel but I have posted links to video content from YouTuber members. That's a screen cap from the episode. The TV show is set on a brightly lit stage and so I toned down some of the bright coloring just a little bit. If I wouldn't have then the photo off to the right would look more bright than it currently is. This is during the performance of "When Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene". There are several moments in the performance where Ray gives us some of his familiar facial expressions...particularly when he sings about the athlete who says he's a girl just because he said he is...with obvious visual facts saying otherwise. I don't know if this is the first song about this subject matter but if Ray puts this out through his own social media platforms it, I think, would generate all kinds of notice.

Those interested, and I'm quite sure all of you are, here is the LINK to watch Ray Stevens perform "When Bubba Changed His Name to Charlene". Since it's a video recorded directly onto a phone from a television set you're not going to have sharp, pristine sound quality...but have the volume up nonetheless and, more importantly, have a listen.

I hope Ray puts this song out as a single...perhaps with a green screen music video. As mentioned, if Ray would put this song out through his own social media, it would grab a whole lot more attention, shares, likes, and general conversation. It's a light-hearted look at what some people out there want everybody to take extremely seriously. It's a social commentary that speaks to the average person who doesn't let themselves get caught up in a lot of the noise out there or allow 'experts' to tell them how to form their views.

A fellow Ray Stevens fan who seen the episode was able to record a few seconds of Ray singing a song that we think is called "Cupholder". Also performed was "Where Are All the 12 Year Olds" which I'm more familiar with since he performed it on an episode of Huckabee earlier this year and it's been on YouTube for more than half a year.
