Ray Stevens: Fixing the Reverse Images...

Hello to all the fans of Ray Stevens!! If you regularly search for online images of Ray I'm sure you've come across reverse images a number of times. A reverse image, for those who don't know, is an image that is photographed and placed online in a reverse fashion. I'm sure most of you are familiar with the playing cards with pictures of country singers...a 1975 bearded image of Ray Stevens appeared in a pack of those playing cards and every time it comes up for sale on some online store they always show a reverse image. In the collage below the reverse image appears in panel one and the correct image of Ray Stevens appears in panel two. Ray has always parted his hair on the left side, as you see in the photo off to the left, and so whenever you see a photo of Ray with his hair parted from the right then you'll know it's a reverse image. The image with the solid blue background is from 1991. Someone posted a photo of the 1991 Music City News issue where Ray, Jimmy Dean, and Kathy Ballie were on the cover promoting an upcoming Songwriters Awards telecast. Yes, as you could guess, the seller uploaded a reverse image of the cover and so I decided to correct it. I don't know too much about the intricacies of computers to understand how images can get posted reverse...all I know is sometimes it happens and if you're not paying enough attention you won't notice right away.

I've posted an image of the 1982 re-issue of the Turn Your Radio On album before. A reverse photo of Ray appears on that album. On the album it has Ray's hair parted on the wrong side and so I not only corrected the image but I enhanced it and did a close-up. I'm thinking the actual photo originated in 1979 or 1980.

CBS Records re-issued the Turn Your Radio On album in 1982...a full ten years after Barnaby Records had released it. Barnaby's recordings were distributed by CBS in 1972 and so they re-issued the album with a different photo in 1982. I had always been drawn to the album cover because something about Ray, to me, looked different and it wasn't until it hit me that the photo of Ray is reversed and so when I corrected the image he looked correct. However, because the album title was also photographed in reverse it caused it to show up reversed when I corrected the image...which is why I did a close-up. If I didn't do a close-up you'd be seeing the name of the album written in reverse above the photo. Some may argue and say if I'm seeing the album title in reverse when I go and correct the image then the photo wasn't actually photographed in reverse...but the truth is it was. The explanation is that the lettering was photographed correctly while the photo of Ray shows up reversed. I've included a collage featuring the reverse image, correct lettering of the 1982 album side by side with the correct image, reverse lettering to visually explain what I'm trying to put into words. The reverse photo of Ray is seen in the first panel of the collage while the correct photo of Ray is seen in the second panel. As you can also see...once you correct the reverse photo the name and album title appear in reverse. Anyway...that reverse photo of Ray is what we see whenever the 1982 re-issue album shows up in online stores and auction sites. I don't know if the actual album features a reverse photo of Ray on the cover or if the image on the 1982 album is just something that appeared online in reverse years ago and it's never been corrected. Whatever the case, I fixed the reverse image of Ray and it's on display in the second photo in the collage below.

Ray Stevens: CMA Fest 2019...

Oh yes it's me once more...a couple of days ago Ray Stevens revealed that he'll be appearing at this year's CMA Fest next month. The announcement came on his social media sites back on May 23rd but this is the first I've gotten to make mention of it in this fan created blog. Ray will take part in an interview on June 6th (which falls on a Thursday) and it'll be conducted by Peter Cooper. The segment is being sponsored by the Country Music Hall of Fame and it'll take place on the CMA Close-Up stage. As far as I know the interview will be his only appearance during the four day CMA Fest which once upon a time was called Fan Fair. The four day event takes place June 6 through June 9th. Ray will be on the CMA Close-Up stage roughly between 1:15pm - 2pm Central on June 6th. As in the past this is a tentative start and end time...with live events there's no telling how long or brief segments may last.

You can read about the CMA Close-Up stage as well as check out the CMA Fest website and learn more by clicking HERE. If you're in the area or are an annual visitor to the CMA Fest and happen to be a fan of Ray Stevens then I'd highly recommend you seek out the CMA Close-Up stage on June 6th!! If you're going to be in Nashville the entire weekend I'd also suggest you pay a visit to the Ray Stevens CabaRay showroom on River Road in Bellevue, a suburb on the West side of Nashville. He's performing there every Friday and Saturday night. You can read all about the showroom by clicking HERE. If you use a GPS device enter Nashville, TN as the city and state. The address for the CabaRay is 5724 River Road and the City/State/Zip is Nashville, TN 37209.

Earlier in the year Ray was interviewed on a series that took place inside the Hall of Fame titled Voices in the Hall. The interview had been recorded in the latter half of 2018 but it's a series where country music artists are interviewed inside the Hall of Fame and so, literally, you're hearing Voices in the Hall...so it isn't a series that features Hall of Fame members exclusively. The series is hosted by Peter Cooper. Ray's episode of that series became available in late March...and by coincidence Ray was announced as one of the newest members of the Country Music Hall of Fame on March 18th. Ray's interview, though, was conduced in late 2018...months before he found out that he'd be one of the newest inductees. I commented on this ironic chain of events back when I shared the podcast.

Ray Stevens: CMA Music Fest 2014...

Hello one and all...the fans of Ray Stevens and those that stop by here to perhaps learn some things about him that you perhaps aren't going to find elsewhere.

There's over 100 photo's in this particular Facebook album. The pictures are a combination of Ray Stevens signing autographs and performing at the Durango sponsored event at the CMA Music Fest this past Saturday. You can see the pictures HERE.

Now then...for those that missed the music performance Saturday afternoon here's a brief re-cap. He performed five songs during his set. The first performance, "Nashville", coincides now with the book/memoir of the same name that's due to have it's 'official release date' later this month. The song itself goes back to the early '70s. Ray, in several interviews through the years, mentioned that he originally wrote "Nashville" due to his being homesick during an international tour in Europe.

As an additional note: a great music video of that song came along recently...a visual tour of Music City. Some of the lyrics in recent performances of the song have been changed from the original due to the topicality found in the original lyrics. In the original Ray mentions Johnny Cash, Boots Randolph, and Mayor Briley. The verse containing those lyrics/references have long since been replaced by references to the Ryman, the Tennessee Titans, and the Opry. The reference to Chet Atkins is still in place and in the music video it has Ray appearing next to Chet's statue.

The second performance of Ray's segment was "It's Me Again, Margaret". It delighted the audience...Ray remarked that during his autograph sessions that he had met hundreds of women either named Margaret or had mothers, cousins, or aunts named Margaret. After the performance Ray started talking about squirrels. All he had to do was say the word 'squirrel' and the audience erupted in cheers. Yes, as you can guess, he performed "Mississippi Squirrel Revival".

After the performance of this song Ray mentioned that August 19th is to be the release date of his gospel project. I looked on the calendar and the 19th of August is on a Tuesday...most new music projects see a Tuesday release. He never said if the CD is going to be available exclusively at his web-store on that date or if it'll be available everywhere on that date. The pattern lately is for him to release something through his website and then several months later have it available on Amazon, Itunes, and other music stores.

After mentioning the CD's upcoming release he performed "If Jesus Is a Stranger".

You may remember that song from a blog I posted several months ago. Ray appeared on one of the last episodes of Mike Huckabee's radio program and I (big surprise!) posted a blog about it. I searched the archives and found that it took place on December 4, 2013. Ray spoke of this future gospel CD then and Mike played the recording of "If Jesus Is a Stranger". At the time Ray had mentioned that the CD's release would happen in January 2014. Something must have come up in the post-production phase or perhaps the January 2014 release originally mentioned on Huckabee's radio program was later considered a bad time of the year to release a project and get the kind of attention it deserves. From what I understand (based on some of Ray's interviews) this upcoming gospel CD is going to be a multiple CD release...meaning it'll include much more than the standard 10-12 songs. So, look for the CD to be available this August. Ray mentioned that there would be 2 volumes to the collection.

Ray closed out his half hour segment with "Everything Is Beautiful". Prior to his performance he asked the sound guy if the audio could be turned up. Listening to his performance over the internet I assumed that the music track's low volume was simply a glitch in the connection...but once Ray asked the sound guy to 'turn up the volume' I could hear the music louder than before. Ray remarked that the people in the audience might be able to hear the music but he couldn't hear it.

All in all it happened to be a good performance. If you're familiar at all with Ray Stevens in a concert setting and you listened to the performance this past Saturday you'll immediately notice that the short time slot did have some impact on his performance. He didn't have the time to elaborate, exaggerate, and or ad-lib as much as he does in a usual performance. I felt like he was just getting warmed up right as his portion was coming to a close. "It's Me Again, Margaret", for example, was funny as usual but it didn't have the timing of the performances he gives in a usual concert setting. It's hard to explain without getting overly analytical. It's Ray Stevens, though...time restricted or given all the time he needs...you're going to be entertained in some fashion and that's the bottom line.
