Ray Stevens: Bubba, The Wine Connoisseur

Hurricane Ray Stevens blew into the on-line music stores in 2008 around the time that the world seemed to be dealing with multiple hurricanes. The actual basis of the song isn't to poke fun at hurricane victims but instead poke fun at the traditional concept of giving hurricanes a name. In this recording Ray tells us about a disaster and that the weather people have given it a name. What is the name you may ask? I won't say! The song is broken into three segments, much like "The Streak", "Shriner's Convention", and "Power Tools". Ray does a broad spoof of Wolf Blitzer in addition to doing an impression of a Reggae reporter "on the scene". The by-stander, or witness, curiously has the same rural delivery as the famed witness who saw "The Streak". "Hurricane" is a fun romp of a song and the album on which it appears boasts 11 more comical recordings as you can tell from looking on the cover of the CD. Also, as you can tell, the image that's used was lifted directly from his 1992 home video, Comedy Video Classics.

One of the songs, "Bubba, The Wine Connoisseur", is one of the more subtle selections. The humor is broad and if you're familiar with wine tasting it's even more hilarious given the absurdity of the situation. Who, in real life, would allow someone like Bubba to sip and gargle and do everything else you do at a wine tasting event and take him seriously? That is where the humor comes from...adding to this we have a French-American 'host' asking Bubba his opinions of wine. The entire recording is hilarious in my opinion...particularly Bubba's commentary on each of the wine's he tastes. The host pronounces Bubba as "Boo Bah". Of course, the french-American accent is did for comical effect and isn't meant to be a legitimate depiction of how they speak. If you're politically correct then this single isn't for you...but yet, if you're politically correct you wouldn't even be reading this blog or being much of a fan of Ray's anyhow. I say this because a lot of people put Ray's comedy songs into the politically incorrect category given the broad, exaggerated humor and characterizations.

The other songs on this CD represent a mixture of new and not so new. Five of the twelve songs on here are re-recordings of songs that didn't have much attention the first time around. "Smoky Mountain, Rattlesnake Retreat", "The Camping Trip", "Makin' the Best of a Bad Situation", "Hugo the Human Cannonball", and "Stuck On You" originally appeared on albums in the mid to late 1980's. I've never been that big of a fan of the re-recordings simply because I grew up hearing the originals on his classic comedy albums on MCA Records and it's those recordings that I fell in love with. I understand, though, that the original recordings are dated vocally and to modernize them they've been re-recorded. Also, there's a popular belief that re-recordings introduce songs to a new audience if the originals are hard to come by, in other words, out of print. The seven songs that are not re-recordings include the title track, "Hurricane", plus this song I've been writing about, "Bubba, The Wine Connoisseur". The rest of the songs are "The Cure", "Sucking Sound", "Hey Bubba, Watch This!", "Down Home Beach", and his version of "Rub It In".

For those who like political satire, "Sucking Sound" is a song about Ross Perot and economics including the trend of American jobs being sent to Mexico, or, American factories pushing out American workers in favor of immigrants, a group that is notoriously known for being cheap labor.

More recently, political satire has found itself on another Ray Stevens recording. This time around it's the topic of health care and how a lot of leaders in Congress want to shove the bill into law. "We The People" which I've written about already is a video hit on You Tube with over 2,000 viewers in a matter of a couple of days. Health care is nick-named ObamaCare by those who don't support it...enjoy the music video...
