Ray Stevens: "Gas" at 11.3K...

Hello all you fans of Ray Stevens!! Oh there's a lot of excitement in the air as we get closer to the release of the upcoming comedy album, Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore. I'm sure some of you saw the news that hit today...over on Ray's official website in the Store section there's a product page for the upcoming comedy album. The product page not only features a track list of the songs but there's a total of 14 songs that will be on the album. Also, here's even more news from Tuesday, the comedy album will go on pre-order this coming Friday!! Yes...this coming Friday (September 24th) Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore will be available for pre-order. The album will be available in CD format as well as digital download. That's not all...if you pre-order the comedy album at Ray's website from September 24th through October 8th you'll receive an autographed copy of the album.

One of the comedy songs on that album is "Gas"...the audio track I've been periodically keeping track of on YouTube. The song's crossed into the 11.3K range...specifically 11,320...a pickup of 110 audio plays since September 16th. The opening paragraph of this blog entry is just a teaser of sorts...for as soon as I publish this blog entry I'll be composing a blog entry focusing entirely on the upcoming comedy album. "Gas", just in case you're wondering, is track three on the upcoming comedy album.

Ray Stevens: "Gas" at 10K...

Hello again! Fresh off of my previous blog entry advertising Ray's 4-CD box set I now turn my attention to his novelty single, "Gas", which will be on a comedy album this fall titled Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore. I don't know what all will be on this comedy album...strangely enough I haven't asked around for any kind of hints...but based on the title I'm going to make the assumption that the content will largely focus on comedy songs with subject matter that is suppose to be taken seriously. His video hit from last year, "The Quarantine Song", fits this description...on the surface the pandemic isn't a laughing matter...but yet Ray's song is very funny and upbeat as it deals with a subject matter that's largely been shielded from humor. So, based on my way of thinking, Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore will be something of an 'I dare you not to laugh at this...' type of release. It's scheduled to be released in October. I'd not be surprised if Curb Records doesn't push it's release up if demand is high...with "Gas" reaching more than 10,000 YouTube audio plays I'd say it's inevitable...but we'll see. Have a listen, though, to "Gas"...now boasting 10,002 plays...a pickup of 102 plays over the course of the last couple of days.

Ray Stevens: Nearly a week's worth of "Gas"...

Hello all you fans of Ray Stevens!! It's been nearly a week since the current novelty single from Ray Stevens, "Gas", became available on June 4, 2021. As of this writing the audio clip on YouTube has gathered almost 6,000 unique views. The total number of unique views is 5,919 which, in my opinion, is pretty good for an audio clip.  As we all know YouTube is a visual site...where music videos and performance videos reign...and so an audio clip nearing 6,000 unique views is pretty good. On Ray's social media they're promoting a brief audio clip of the song rather than the full length audio clip that Curb Records uploaded onto YouTube. The brief audio snippet that they've been sharing is also attached to various online music sites. I've provided links to Amazon on a couple of previous blog entries and I also made the remark that the digital single, "Gas", is $1.29 and at that price it's the cheapest "Gas" in America right now!! You can tell I'm proud of that quip which is why I decided to include it once again. In a nearby town the price of fuel is $2.95 but in another town not too far from here the cheapest is $3.25 and so I'm glad I decided to top off the tank at the fuel station with the $2.95 price although even that's way too high.

The cover art for the digital single is a tie-in with the fuel prices and the recent fuel shortage caused by the East Coast attack from overseas but the lyrics tell an entirely different story...that of a doddering, bumbling President who'd rather talk about the complexities of another type of "Gas" than address what's really important. The novelty song marks a subtle return to political comedy for Ray Stevens...the last time one of his songs had a political overtone was "You Didn't Build That" in May 2015. I was mentioning this in a previous blog entry but Ray hasn't issued what's known as a green screen comedy music video in a number of years...not since "Mary and Joseph and the Baby and Me" in 2016. In May 2020 he put out a performance video of "The Quarantine Song" which was taped in his recording studio. In November 2020 he released the 50th anniversary rendition of "Everything is Beautiful" and the "Everything is Beautiful / United We Stand" medley. Those two music videos had some green screen technology but they're not comedy songs. "Gas" would be a fun song to attempt to turn into a music video. Will he turn it into a music video or will it remain an audio clip? The comedy album that this song will appear won't be released until October...so it's hard to tell if he'll be releasing further songs from the upcoming album or not. That album is going to be titled Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore. The Iconic Songs of the 20th Century 4-CD box set is to be released next month. Ray is currently working on a sequel to the box set. Meanwhile...listen to "Gas"...

Ray Stevens: We The People at 10...

First Pressing; April 2010
Welcome to my fan created Ray Stevens blog where I take a look at all aspects of Ray's lengthy career...from it's beginnings to present day. In this blog entry I'm traveling back to 2010 and if you were paying attention to Ray Stevens at that point in time then you're very familiar with his political comedy. It's a phase of his career that you can't overlook given how much of an impact it had on his career going forward. In the years leading up to 2010 Ray was more or less semi-retired and if you read his memoir you'll know that he, briefly, was even contemplated retiring from the road and concert performances altogether. He had returned to Branson and re-opened his former theater for a two season run (2005 and 2006) and he occasionally released CDs on his own record label through his website throughout the middle period of the 2000s. In the latter half of 2009, out of the blue, Ray Stevens issued a music video titled "We The People" on YouTube. He had been issuing his older music videos onto the video hosting site for several months and reaching new audiences in the process. A health care reform bill, officially titled Affordable Care Act, but nicknamed ObamaCare, dominated the news cycle in the latter half of 2019 and Ray's "We The People" music video addressed the bill. The video took off like wildfire in December 2019 and for the next several weeks it kept racking up hundreds of thousands of unique views...eventually the music video surpassed 1,000,000 unique views by late January 2010 and it was all over conservative blog sites and being shared on social media for several months.

The video's rapid rise as an on-line viral video led to Ray being asked to appear on several high profile television shows on the Fox News Channel as well as receiving invitations to be a guest on local talk radio programs to talk about his video and his decision to jump into the political fray. A lot of critics throughout social media found amusement in the fact that usually it's liberal ideology that gets put into songs and yet there was Ray Stevens singing about the importance of conservative and Tea Party ideology. Some critics mistook Ray's music video as a 'joke' but once he began making appearances on Fox News and making the rounds on talk radio it was clear to the critics that this was no joke and that he was serious.

Second Pressing; June 2010
The above image of the We The People album was originally released in what they call an AMRAY case, which as you can see, is identical to your typical DVD. I have the April 2010 release as I wanted to own the collection as soon as it was released through Ray's web store. After the release and massive success of the "We The People" music video the follow-up, "Caribou Barbie", cemented Ray's YouTube success. The song is about Sarah Palin and if you know your Presidential politics she ran as John McCain's running mate in the 2008 election. She was the Governor of Alaska and became a lightning rod within the Tea Party/conservative ranks after making a series of campaign speeches. As a result of her meteoric rise on the national political scene it left her open for all kinds of harsh, brutal, and deeply personal attacks from her critics. She was widely parodied and she overshadowed McCain in nearly all of their public appearances. The actress portraying Sarah Palin in the music video is Lori Stegner and she has several speaking roles in the song. Lori would later appear with Ray in an official duet, "Tim-Tay-Shun", in 2014. After the release of "Caribou Barbie" in March 2010, which to date has received over 647,000 unique views, he turned his focus on Congress once more with "Throw the Bums Out" which became something of an unofficial theme song during the 2010 election cycle. The video was released in March...several weeks after "Caribou Barbie". Ray was invited to the 2011 edition of C-PAC and "Throw the Bums Out" was among the songs he performed. The epidemic of illegal immigration along the southern border of the United States had long been a controversial issue but it became the subject matter in one of Ray's most pointed recordings, "Come to the U.S.A.". The video continues to be one of Ray's biggest YouTube smash hits...issued in May 2010 it's gotten well over 10,000,000 unique views. The actions taken by the Obama Administration and his justice department (you all remember Eric Holder, yes?) well, that song fit right in with the public mood at the time and it was an immediate smash hit. Ray's music videos were consistently among the most viewed/most shared during the first half of 2010.

Third Pressing; 2010
The image off to the left is a re-issue of the AMRAY release featuring the bonus DVD of four music videos. As you can see it's in a traditional jewel case. One of the hoaxes that gets all sorts of charitable donations and is placed as a high priority among some political circles is the concept of global warming. I don't believe in global warming and it was fun to hear "The Global Warming Song" poke fun at the whole idea. The music video is filled with all sorts of sight gags. It hit YouTube in June 2010 and it's gotten over a million unique views as of this writing. The song is about a couple of simpletons who invent a 'left handed hammer' and decide to buy property in a frozen wasteland with the idea that once global warming thaws it out they can re-sell it as a tropical island resort. The video's gotten more than a million unique views and it's one of those satirical songs that you really have to listen to in order to appreciate the humor, I think. A lot of the songs on this 2010 CD are in that vein...nearly all of them feature heavy political comedy and quite a few of them require your full attention. Several songs on this CD that were never made into music videos but I thought they should have been: "Fly Over Country" doesn't get anymore direct than that. In that song Ray tells of small town America and how most, if not all, politicians that leave small town America and head for Washington, D.C. forget where they came from...until it's time for re-election. "Fly Over Country" is the area of the United States that make up Middle America...the area between the East and West Coasts...that politicians 'fly over' as they make their way from one coastal town to the other. I also felt that "We Are the Government" should have been a single/video. In the fall of 2010 Ray returned to Branson, Missouri for a series of concerts at The Welk Theater. In early October footage from his concerts emerged on DVD as Such a Night: 50 Years of Hits and Hilarity On Stage...Live and a secondary release, Patriots and Politics, was also released through his web store.

In August of 2010 Ray released a music video addressing the illegal immigration problem along Arizona's border with Mexico. This song wasn't found on We The People and it received high profile mention on Fox News as well. It also broke the formula of comedy...this particular video was serious. "God Save Arizona" defends the actions of the State's Governor at the time, Jan Brewer, as well as Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The Obama Administration is vilified over their decision to take the State of Arizona to court over their illegal immigration policies. Brewer served as Arizona Governor from 2009 until 2015. The Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, remained in office until his 2017 re-election defeat.

Ray followed up We The People the very next year with Spirit of '76...and that is the CD in which "God Save Arizona" would be found. Ray released several more songs from the 2011 CD in video format throughout 2011 and 2012 but then he returned to We The People in July 2012 with the music video release of "Obama Nation". That video's gotten more than a million unique views as of this writing. Ray ultimately released, in 2012, an essay book titled Let's Get Political. The book features the songwriter/publisher credits and the lyrics to all the songs found on We The People and Spirit of '76. In addition it includes Ray's personal commentary about every song. The back of the book's cover features CD images of his 2010 and 2011 releases as well as a photo of Ray and a photo of Buddy Kalb. This overview was just a tip of the iceberg...if you happened to have been following Ray's career from December 2009 through mid 2013 it was quite a whirlwind. You can search the archives here and read every moment of it in case you are new to his career. If you witnessed it first hand as I did go and re-visit that era of his career in the archives. Ray was at something of a crossroads in his career and "We The People" took him into a bold and different direction that's worth revisiting from time to time.

Ray Stevens: More than 100 Million YouTube unique views...

Hello one and all!! I was over on YouTube looking over some stats surrounding the video clips/music videos from Ray Stevens. As of this writing the combined number of unique views of the various videos uploaded to his YouTube channel currently sits at 111,624,798!!! So, it's a little more than an even 100 million.

I found myself looking through the stats because in the comment section over on the official YouTube page for the video clip advertising his 2015 CD, Here We Go Again!, as February's sale of the month in his on-line store, I left a reply addressing a statement made by someone else that said, and I'm paraphrasing: "...probably no one born after 2000 has any idea who Ray Stevens is...".

In my reply I openly wondered if the comment was a baited statement just waiting for someone to bite...of which I gladly bit because it sounded like a statement that was partially true and I felt I could offer a factual reply and explain how, as a recording artist, you can make a comfortable living without your music ever making an appearance on a weekly chart. If you find an audience and they like what you do and you continue to reach people and build your audience and they purchase your music or attend your concerts, etc. etc. then you don't actually need your image and music plastered all over entertainment magazines and on radio.

The reply I gave, specifically, was: "Oh well, it's their loss, even though it sounds like a baited statement just waiting for someone to bite which I'm gladly doing. The recently inducted Country Music Hall of Fame legend, Ray Stevens, I don't think relies on age specific demographics or ever did...pure entertainment is all that's necessary...but you're somewhat accurate about those born after 2000...but I'd argue that he's known by a lot of people under 35. It isn't just a collection of people 60 and older watching his YouTube videos. He has his own slice of the gigantic internet pie.".

Here's some facts you can't argue with...

He's had a YouTube channel since 2009 and he's had his own website since, at least, the late 1990s. I came onto the internet by way of Web-TV in 2002 and Ray had a website then and he has one still. The design of his website and product availability in his web-store has obviously changed over the years but he's had an internet presence for nearly 20 years. The YouTube channel hit the internet on July 13, 2009. As I mentioned at the top of this blog entry the total number of combined unique views obtained by all of the video uploads on his channel currently sits at 111,624,798. It's a fantastic stat for an entertainer that turned 81 years of age a couple of weeks ago on January 24th.

I'll bet there will be somebody out there who, upon reading what I just wrote, will feverishly scour YouTube for an entertainer older than Ray and check the combined unique view total of that performer's video uploads and if it's larger than Ray's they'll cheerfully plaster the information all over social media sites just to diminish Ray's total. Childish, yes, but it's speaks to the lengths of what people will do on social media. There are some people who resent Ray's successful career. You may be asking yourselves: Are there people that deliberately resent any kind of success Ray Stevens has? It's sad but true...but there are people out there like that and I'm making that accusation based on years of on-line experience on my part and seeing with my own eyes the kinds of things said about his music and his business decisions on various social media sites.

An example being his 1992 performance of "I Saw Elvis in a U.F.O." which was part of his 1993 VHS, Ray Stevens Live!. The performance was uploaded onto Ray's YouTube channel on June 12, 2013. The reaction, as of this writing, consists of more than 3,700 thumbs up ratings and 105 thumbs down ratings. A hysterical performance, for sure, and highly entertaining but apparently that wasn't the case for 105 people. The video itself has 423,786 unique views as of this writing. There will be those that say "nobody has to like the same style of music...or the same singer..." and that's a perfectly fine statement...but what I'm getting at is there are people who purposely click videos for the sole purpose of thumbing it down or leaving vile comments...or they do both. If you don't like a singer then why access their video content in the first place...but of course I answered that rhetorical question already just before asking it. It gives those with anger a chance to show it off. The deliberate nature of a person thumbing down a video or writing scathing remarks simply because they do not like that artist is something that can't be stopped, unfortunately...along with all the positives that come with the internet there also come the negatives.

Shifting gears...after months of procrastinating I finally got around to clearing some space for my two new record players that I received as Christmas gifts. A couple of my turntables were stolen, pretty much, as part of a complicated family issue revolving around my grandfather's power of attorney and the disappearance of a lot of my items I kept in storage at his house. I managed to retrieve all of my vinyl, my modest collection of TV Guides, and everything else of mine from his house but the two record players came up missing and I've never been able to find them. Anyway...I received two turntables this last Christmas, to replace the two that came up missing, but I had them sitting in their boxes unopened...I hadn't figured out where I'd put them. The wait/procrastination ended this past Friday and I have the turntables out of their boxes and sitting in my room. One of them is close to the desk I'm sitting at and another is close to my bedroom door. I have the one near the bedroom door sitting on top of a couple of crates...the crates contain the vinyl albums and vinyl singles I've purchased over the years. Those items had been sitting next to my desk on a stand...and so with the relocation of the vinyl items into the crates it created space for the other record player. I listened to Collector's Series this morning. Yes...I just had to play a Ray Stevens album to break in the new record player with. The compilation album of eight songs that RCA issued in 1985...so that particular collection is 35 this year. It's the only compilation to spotlight some of the recordings he issued on RCA Records during his tenure with them. He signed with them late in 1979 and ultimately released three studio albums on the label in 1980, 1981, and 1982; followed by a Greatest Hits album in 1983. The 1983 release only featured two recordings from his RCA period, "Shriner's Convention" and "The Dooright Family", while the remaining eight songs spanned the years 1968 through 1975...so it wasn't necessarily dominated with RCA recordings...but Collector's Series continues to remain the definitive collection of his RCA recordings. One of my new record players appears in this photo. The lid doesn't lift up all the way which perhaps is a good thing...like the hood of a car if you want the lid to remain open you lift the lid and then prop the second half of the attachment into a designated space on the first half of the attachment and it acts like a lock and it keeps the lid opened. I hadn't played anything on the other record player near my desk, yet. That'll come later today and yes it'll be another of my vinyl Ray Stevens albums holding the distinction of being the first thing played on that record player, too.

Me and one of my new Record Players: 2019

Ray Stevens: The Road to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Part Twenty-Five...

Hello all...we're still in 2010 as I begin this installment of the mini-blog series. This was a year filled with so much activity it's near impossible to recount everything that was happening as Ray's political comedy videos were taking him all over the place. On tax day as it's called (April 15th) he appeared at a large Tea Party event organized by Freedomworks. The event lasted all day but Ray was part of the evening line-up and performed "If Ten Percent is Good Enough for Jesus". This particular song received new life, as the saying goes, during this political era of his music career. The song had previously been recorded by Ray nearly 20 years earlier in 1993...and it was a fan favorite then but in 2010 it took on whole new life thanks to it's exposure at Tea Party events such as the one Freedomworks organized in 2010. The song was part of the 22 track We The People album released that year. It reached the Billboard Country Album chart...his first album to appear on this chart since 2002's Osama Yo' Mama. The album also appeared on the Billboard Top Comedy Album chart...a secondary chart that, as you could imagine, ranks comical releases. It hit the Top-5 on this chart. The driving force behind the successful YouTube music videos were the public, in general, viewing them and sharing them on social media sites. A unique view is best described as the first viewing of a video from a computer, smart phone, or any other kind of on-line device. The tracking used to total the number of unique views for a YouTube video doesn't count additional views from the same device. The reason for that is obvious...multiple plays from the same on-line device would no doubt skew the numbers...and so the policy of counting one view per device keeps things on the level and doesn't allow for artificial view counts.

The music video that broke through and pushed Ray's visibility into the on-line stratosphere (if there's even such a place) is "Come to the U.S.A.". On the surface the song may cause a listener to think that Ray is inviting an onslaught of illegal immigrants to set their sights on the United States but in truth the song uses sarcasm and points out how illegal immigration is dealt with in other countries whereas the United States Federal Government more or less knows about the situation but often turns their collective eye away. A lot of the reason is for labor reasons. Cheap labor...performing jobs that the average U.S. citizen wouldn't do for minimum wage or less...can be given to desperate illegal immigrants. It's exploitation, of course, but there's so many other things tied into it that it would take more blog entries to explain it all. If you're wanting a more detailed look at this music video and the subject matter visit the archives of this blog...go to the year 2010 and look for blog entries focused on "Come to the U.S.A." and you'll get my commentary and information from that time period. The video itself has obtained more than 10,000,000 unique views since it debuted on YouTube back in May of 2010. Along the same lines of cheap labor...but this time around focusing on America's jobs being sent to Mexico...is "Sucking Sound". This song had previously appeared on the non-political Hurricane CD but it's an example of one of those songs from Ray that, from time to time, takes on a topical subject matter and placed on a collection of lighthearted comedy songs. Ray does his vocal impression of Ross Perot in this recording...a song that he co-wrote with Buddy Kalb...and it's a perfect fit on the 2010 We The People album. Some of the songs on that album originally appeared on the Thank You album from the early 2000s: "Let's Roll", "Stand Up", and of course "Thank You".

Since we're in a topical vein and Ray's career had taken a political/topical/patriotic turn do you all remember the lawsuit filed against the Arizona State Government by the Federal Government? This surreal event in U.S. History began brewing in the latter half of 2009 and it reached a boiling point in 2010. The Governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, and several local police officers were stopping suspected illegals at the Arizona border. The Obama Administration stepped in and the Attorney General at the time, Eric Holder, filed lawsuits preventing the Arizona State Government from enforcing existing immigration laws. This entire controversy turned up in a very serious recording from Ray titled "God Save Arizona" which he co-wrote with Buddy Kalb. The music video, believe it or not, created some controversy with YouTube. It was uploaded in August of 2010 but was taken down without warning several days after it made it's debut...but it eventually returned to the video hosting site and has remained on-line ever since. If I recall correctly the video had fell victim to a lot of troll-induced flagging from those that didn't like the opinions expressed in the song and, as a precaution, YouTube took the video down for their own 'investigation' and they felt that it didn't violate any of their 'rules' and it returned to the video hosting site. The video, like all of Ray's previous politically themed videos, was an immediate social-media hit and in September the video was given exposure on an episode of Bill O'Reilly's television series on Fox News Channel.

In the winter of 2010 publicity eventually surfaced surrounding Ray's Christmas CD from 2009. The project had gotten overlooked due to the enormous launch of "We The People" on the internet and everything else that came along in 2010. The holiday album, as mentioned in my previous blog entry, features serious Christmas songs...most of them done with new arrangements...while some remain faithful to the traditional arrangements. In this collection you'll get Ray's versions of "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", an original titled "Deck The Halls with Teardrops", plus his take on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" plus more. In November 2010 onto YouTube arrived the music video of "Nightmare Before Christmas" from his comical Christmas album thirteen years earlier.

The political overtones in his career remained intact in 2011 as he was one of the guests at CPAC in February. The acronym stands for Conservative Political Action Conference. He performed a couple of songs during his CPAC segment: "Mr. President, Mr. President" and "The Skies Just Ain't Friendly Anymore". The latter deals with the security measures in place from the TSA while the former features Ray as a reporter asking Obama a series of questions with predictably humorous answers. A couple of months later a brand new video emerged, "Obama Budget Plan", in April. This song/video was centered around the Federal Government's spending habits...debt and deficit were some of the topics headlining nationally and this song told the story of a married couple that decide to print their own money, spend more and more, but have no care or concern because they can simply print more money just like the Federal Government does. The video has a twist ending...visually...evoking sentiments that I'm sure are held by many when it comes to their wishes for many members of Congress.

2011
The music video for "Mr. President, Mr. President", the song he debuted at his CPAC appearance in February, hit YouTube in September 2011. The music video uses images of Obama during a press conference, making it appear as if he's listening to the questions being asked by Ray, whose dressed in traditional newspaper journalist attire...with pen in hand...it's a very funny song and video but the critics were plenty. Some criticized the old-fashioned look of how Ray portrayed the reporter...taking swipes at Ray for not being 'current' and having the reporter wireless or sporting some sort of technological device...rather than appearing as if he's from the 1940s or 1950s. The politically charged critics, of course, criticized the song simply on the grounds of it putting Obama in a humorous light. This run of political and topical music videos ultimately led to the release of Spirit of '76, an 11 track album, which features the audio recordings of several songs previously released in music video format on YouTube: "God Save Arizona", "The Skies Just Ain't Friendly Anymore", "Obama Budget Plan", and a couple of songs that would eventually become music videos after the release of the CD: "Mr. President, Mr. President" and more than a year later, "Grandpa Voted Democrat". There are several other songs on the 2011 album that I thought would have been perfect for music video adaptation: "Cap'n Trade the Pirate" is hysterical and it could have easily played into the imagery depicted in the music video for "The Pirate Song" more than a decade earlier. I always envisioned "New Normal" as a music video presented on intentionally grainy film and given a classic country music 'look'...the way Ray sings the title phrase had me thinking of Hank Williams and in my mind I invented a possible direction of staging a music video and have it look as if it's from the 1950s. The We The People album from 2010 featured a couple of songs that I think could have been turned into funny music videos but weren't: "Solar Powered Song" and "We Are the Government".

Clyde Records, in November 2011, issued the DVD collection Internet Video Hits. This release was designed to provide a collection for the music videos that Ray had issued on the internet over the last year and a half. Ray, when speaking of the release, mentioned that it's been issued mainly for those that are older and perhaps do not have any interest of being on the internet but are fans of his nevertheless...and so this DVD would provide the non-internet fan base the chance of seeing the on-line music videos in one collection. The DVD seen a wider release in February of 2012. The DVD features 9 political music videos with a bonus music video dealing with political correctness, "The Nightmare Before Christmas", added to round out the total.

Throughout most of Ray's television appearances on cable news programs and on talk-radio in the aftermath of "We The People" he often mentioned a project he was working on in which he would pay tribute to novelty songs of all time periods and music formats. The project surfaced in February of 2012 as The Encyclopedia of Recorded Comedy Music. The project took two years, according to Ray's interviews as well as the on-line YouTube advertisements, and it's a massive collection of songs. It's a 9-CD box set complete with an extensive booklet with liner notes, commentary, and stories behind the songs Ray chose to record for the collection. When the project was still in production there were some fans that thought Ray would be presenting a collection of novelty songs recorded by other artists...they didn't realize that Ray himself would be performing the songs. So, in this 9-CD collection, we have Ray's versions of novelty classics such as "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose it's Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?", "Little Brown Jug", "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", "Three Little Fishes", "Open the Door, Richard", "Mairzy Doats", "Haunted House", "Poison Ivy", "Chug-a-Lug", and dozens of others. Ray actively promoted the 9-CD project and performed songs from the collection on several television programs. The collection featured songs from his own career, too, given that Ray is one of the legendary performers of novelty/comedy songs. Ray's cover of a Toby Keith single, "I Wanna Talk About Me", is on this 9-CD collection. Ray remarked that it comes across as a novelty song to him and so he decided to do his version of the song for this collection.

In the midst of the publicity for the 9-CD box set, though, came a book from Ray titled Let's Get Political. The book features lyrics for the songs found in We The People and Spirit of '76 as well as his remarks and opinions of all the songs and his thoughts surrounding topical issues of the day. It was sold through his website's store. It's a soft-cover book and in digest form...meaning that it's comparable in size to an issue of Farmer's Almanac, for example. In July 2012 a music video for "Obama Nation", a song from Ray's 2010 We The People album, hit YouTube.

In November 2012 "Grandpa Voted Democrat" from 2011's Spirit of '76 hit YouTube. The song deals with voter fraud...a very real concern in any election but it was one of the headlining concerns of the American voting process in a series of recent election cycles both local and national. Now, as history shows, Obama won re-election in November 2012 but the Republicans gained even more control in Congress and the Senate...it built on that party's momentum from 2010.

In my previous installment I made mention of the six week run of concerts Ray performed at The Welk Resort in Branson, Missouri during the fall months of 2010 at the peak of his involvement with political humor. The concerts were split in two segments: The first segment was his traditional concert performance featuring his classic hits like "The Streak", "It's Me Again, Margaret", "Gitarzan", and others while the second segment was political. Some of his performances at this run of concerts eventually found their way onto DVD. Ray issued Such a Night: 50 Years of Hits and Hilarity on Stage...LIVE! as well as a secondary DVD called Patriots and Politics. The DVDs were released on Clyde Records in 2012 but the concert footage was taped in October 2010. I had never seen Ray perform any of the politically themed songs in concert and so the secondary DVD was my chance of seeing him perform "We The People" and "Come to the U.S.A." in a concert setting. I had seen him perform "Safe at Home", though, and "Thank You", in concert. The former is actually nostalgia-laced without a trace of politics at all but it speaks to America's core values and therefore it's categorized as a patriotic song. It had actually originated in 2000 on a studio album Ray issued that year called Ear Candy...but it had long since become part of his concert set-list and ever since 2010 it's been something of a mainstay in his concert performances given the response from the audiences. Ray closed out 2012 in a festive mood...releasing several Christmas music videos on YouTube. "White Christmas" is performed much in the same manner as The Drifters, one of Ray's favorite Rhythm and Blues groups. "Redneck Christmas", at long last, is presented in music video form...even though it's lyrics paint a clear picture already it's fun to actually see a music video of that particular song brought to life. "Blue Christmas" is performed as Porky Pig...which is based on a novelty song from a number of years earlier from a fictional group called Seymour Swine and the Squealers. Ray performs most of the song in a stuttering, stammering fashion before concluding the song straight. The song was issued as a single in 2012 as it's not part of his 1997 or 2009 Christmas albums but it was also made into a music video. A social commentary release titled "Merry Christmas" hit YouTube in December 2012 as well. This, from the pen of Ray Stevens, takes on the politically correct advocates head on and their War on Christmas. Ray proudly voices his right to say 'Merry Christmas' rather than Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings. This was the fourth Christmas music video in the bonanza of music videos that Ray issued in December of 2012 and it was the most somber of the bunch...which goes without saying.

Now, let's see...2010, 2011, and 2012...my oh my how hectic and full of surprises those years provided for Ray Stevens on his road to the Country Music Hall of Fame. In a career laced with unpredictability those three years were about as unpredictable as you could get...his career was as eclectic as ever...being stretched in many different directions and having his hands in several more projects yet to see release as 2012 came to a close. In my next installment I'll take a look at 2013 and 2014...maybe also part of 2015. Ray's main focal point in this era, post-political humor, was a return to more conventional, traditional forms of music expression...but he didn't completely silence himself on matters of politics though...and he issued a much anticipated (from this fan's point of view) career look-back in print form...not necessarily an autobiography...more of a memoir...and more about that in my next installment in Ray Stevens road to the Country Music Hall of Fame!

Ray Stevens: Looking at 2016...

Hello all the fans of Ray Stevens and a belated hello to 2016!! In the hiatus from my previous blog entry a couple of additional appearances have been added to Ray's 2016 schedule. First off there's to be a book signing later this month on January 30th at the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Hendersonville, TN. The event takes place on a Saturday from 2-4pm local time. You can read about it HERE. As I mentioned in one of my earlier blog entries the memoir, Ray Stevens' Nashville, has become the basis for Ray's current RFD-TV television series. In one of those blog entries I made mention that "Nashville", for Ray Stevens, had gone from vinyl (1973), to music video (2013), to book (2014), to television (2015). I'm still hoping the television series makes it's way to DVD, too! The program airs every Saturday night on RFD-TV. The other additional appearance that's relatively new since my previous blog is an upcoming appearance on May 14th at the Moon River Theatre in Branson, Missouri. It's officially been re-titled The Andy Williams Performing Arts Center and so if you should Google Ray's name and Moon River Theatre chances are you're going to come up with older results from last year and the years previous. If you choose to not perform an on-line search you can visit Branson's site HERE to find out more information or you can visit the venue's site HERE and click the thumbnail image of Ray. It'll open up the Celebrity Weekend page and scroll to Ray's May 14th appearance.

Unless a concert announcement pops up from now until March 9th, Ray's first concert of the year is to be on March 9th at the Strawberry Festival in Plant City, Florida. That concert is to take place at 3:30pm. You can purchase tickets by calling 813-754-1996 found on the venue's site HERE under the Tickets and Pricing Information section. There are 2 concerts scheduled for the month of April and 2 for the month of May, including the Branson concert on May 14th. The other concert in May is an appearance on May 21st at the Shipshewana Event Center in Shipshewana, Indiana. During this appearance Ray is to give 2 concerts. The first concerts begins at 1pm and the second one is at 7:30pm. You can read all about it by clicking HERE.

On April 16th Ray is to be in Bremen, Georgia at the Mill Town Music Hall. On April 1st he'll be in Jacksonville, Florida at THE FLORIDA THEATRE.

One of the concerts posted on Ray's Events page at his official site isn't listed on the venue's page (as of this writing). It's a concert that's suppose to take place in Chattanooga, Tennessee at the Tivoli Theatre on April 17th. I've visited the Chattanooga Tivoli Theatre site and searched the concerts and there isn't one listed for April 17th but there are others listed before and after that date. This could be a case of a contract not officially being signed yet or the venue is going to add the date at some point in the future...but seeing that this is January and the concert's suppose to take place on April 17th it looks like tickets would've been become available by this time. Those in the area and are wondering if there's to be a Ray Stevens concert there or not can call the venue and ask. Their number is 423-757-5580.

It's become tradition on this fan-created blog page at the beginning of each new year to spotlight specific Ray Stevens recordings, albums, music videos, or other career-related activities that are going to be reaching some sort of milestone. 2016 marks the 55th anniversary (!) of Ray's first Hot 100 single, "Jeremiah Peabody's Polyunsaturated Quick Dissolving Fast Acting Pleasant Tasting Green and Purple Pills". It doesn't seem like that long ago that I posted a blog celebrating the single's Golden anniversary (50th)...but yet that took place back in 2011. 2016 also marks the 50th anniversary of "Freddie Feelgood and His Funky Little Five Piece Band". The recording originated in 1966 on the Monument label and it appeared on the Hot 100 for a couple of weeks. Several years later Monument included the recording on Ray's 1969 pseudo-live album, Gitarzan. Since that time the copy of "Freddie Feelgood" that's appeared most often on compilation albums is the one lifted from the 1969 album featuring the laughter. The Freddie single became the subject of a music spotlight in the June 11, 1966 issue of Billboard...not too lengthy of a mention...reading it in modern times one gets the feeling the remarks happened to be applied insincerely by giving it what I call the ol' novelty song shrug-off treatment...something that a lot of music critics were and still are known to do. Not much detail is given about the recording itself but there's nothing negative said, either, but it's a magazine feature and only a certain amount of space was available in those years.

The B-side of Freddie happens to be a serious recording titled "There's One in Every Crowd" which, to date, is still only available as the B-side of Freddie. A lot of Ray's B-side recordings for Mercury and Monument have never been made available on CD or Mp3. Ray has since made a music video of "Freddie Feelgood" and I've posted it on my blog several times over the years. The video arrived in 2000 as part of one of Ray's VHS home video projects, Funniest Video Characters. Years later Ray added it to his YouTube page...debuting the music video on May 25, 2011.

2016 marks the 40th anniversary of Ray's single, "You Are So Beautiful". In doing so it also marked his debut on Warner Brothers...after a 5 year run on Barnaby Records. This is the era of Ray's career that I'm the most fascinated with and a large part of it has to do with the mystique that surrounds his years at the label. I love finding any tidbit of information about his recordings and the activities in his career during that 1976-1979 time frame. Although I've got the music from him during that time span and I've read up on a lot of things through the years I still get the most excited whenever I see something new about Ray posted from that era. His debut album for the label, Just for the Record, obviously reaches 40 this year, too. I'm proud to say I have almost all of Ray's studio albums in some form or another via vinyl, cassette, and CD...and like a kid let loose in a candy store is the feeling I got once I gained in my possession Just For the Record. This same feeling overcame me once I seen an episode of Pop! Goes the Country from 1979 and he sang "You Are So Beautiful" and debuted a song that had yet to be released commercially, "Shriner's Convention". In case you hadn't heard "You Are So Beautiful" it's arranged in a Bluegrass fashion along the lines of "Misty" from the previous year and like "Misty" the 1976 hit is also performed uptempo. "You Are So Beautiful" hit the Top-20 on the country music charts...followed by the Top-30 placing of "Honky Tonk Waltz". In the final weeks of 1976 a certain single, "In the Mood", became available. Released as The Henhouse Five Plus Too it had a brief but commercially strong run in early 1977. I'll go into more detail about that particular recording later this year as it gets closer to December.

In addition to Ray's series of concerts in 2016 he's going to continue to stay busy working on his RFD-TV program. The episodes that are currently airing had been taped months in advance...and I believe production of that first season wrapped up at some point in the summer of 2015. The series debuted on November 7, 2015 and they're midway through the first season of first-run episodes. They'll all be reran during the spring and summer months, I assume, and the series should make a return in the late fall of 2016. Given the time he'll be spending in 2016 rehearsing, taping, producing, and starring in the RFD series, plus the handful of concert dates, and the venue that's suppose to open in Nashville called The Ray Stevens Cabaray, one may ask if he'll be too busy to concentrate on any new CD's or music videos this calendar year.

His last full length music video production, to date, arrived on May 19, 2015 for a song called "You Didn't Build That", from his current CD, Here We Go Again!.

Now, for those not aware, Ray Stevens has a political comedy section in his music catalog. It started in 2009 after the music video release of "We The People" and reached it's zenith in 2012...right around the time Obama got re-elected. In that 3 year span it wasn't uncommon to see Ray's music pop-up for discussion on numerous high profile programs on the Fox News Channel or on talk radio. He was interviewed on more than 2 dozen radio programs either as an in-studio guest or by way of a phone hook-up. The string of political comedy music videos reached millions upon millions of people of all political beliefs and are still being discovered to this day...but...

Ray's laid off the political comedy videos considerably since 2012 but "You Didn't Build That" happened to be a surprise on his 2015 comedy CD (marking a return to political humor after a couple of years). The CD also featured the previously released song, from 2010, "Come to the U.S.A." (the video's gotten 9.2 million unique views on YouTube!!). I assume it's addition on the 2015 CD is meant as a social-comment tag-along for "You Didn't Build That" and "A Handshake Will Do"...since it appears between those 2 songs on the CD...

1. Taylor Swift is Stalkin' Me
2. What'd I Say?
3. There Must Be a Pill For This
4. Walkin' the Dog
5. Hearts Made of Stone
6. Pickin' on the Chicken
7. The Baptism of Stumpy Brown
8. Little By Little
9. You Didn't Build That
10. Come to the U.S.A.
11. A Handshake Will Do
12. Knock Him Out, John

Ray Stevens: You Didn't Build That, Blog 3...

Hello one and all!! I'm assuming those that attended the previous concert from Ray Stevens at the Moon River Theatre (this past Saturday night) enjoyed the program...there hasn't been any feedback from those that attended...no comments, no pictures, no nothing...but I'm guessing that one of the songs performed is this one...his most recent video release, "You Didn't Build That". As mentioned in passing in the previous 2 installments spotlighting this video the title originated from a remark Obama made during one of his numerous speaking events...can't remember if he said it during a State of the Union address, a campaign speech, a campaign rally...or wherever...the point is the phrase generated inspiration enough to compose a song using the phrase. Ray, Buddy Kalb, and Chuck Redden are the credited songwriters. It's track 9 on the Here We Go Again! CD. The video hit YouTube on May 19, 2015...of course you're all encouraged to share this video among your on-line friends and share it on political sites if you hadn't done so already.

The upcoming 2016 election cycle and the various debates among candidates tend to dominate much of a cable news programs and the political blog sites...and it'll only get more and more dominant as the calendar flips over to 2016...but Obama's still the President...he's still in a highly powerful position to push his agenda through a largely inept Congress...but let this song remind you of the kind of policies and the kind of mentality that you don't want in the White House anymore or, for that matter, in Congress anymore...

Unique views for the video sit at 49,752...a month ago the count sat at 41,815. The fact that the video's gotten a 7,000 plus increase with hardly any mainstream media coverage is cause for some celebration. The actual pick-up in views is 7,937...so it's more closer to 8,000 additional discoveries since mid August. Let's see it break the 50,000 plateau sooner rather than later. If you are one that prefers the audio over the video you can click HERE and purchase the Mp3 of "You Didn't Build That" on Amazon.

Ray Stevens: Video Singles...

There's been a pair of video singles tied to the current Ray Stevens CD, Here We Go Again. The first happened to be "Taylor Swift is Stalkin' Me" and the second, "You Didn't Build That". The video's are extreme opposites of each other...the first one deals with the delusions of a man believing Taylor is stalking him because he sees her everywhere that he happens to be. Ray performed the song several times in the spring of 2015 during some of his appearances...one such being a guest appearance on the Grand Ole Opry...it happened to be the first time he performed it in concert. Those that had no idea who Ray Stevens happened to be didn't know what to make of the video.

A lot of those confused and at a loss being young kids and teenagers (primarily Taylor's fan base) that more or less had been alerted to the video due to it containing Taylor's name in the title. Some of the more humorless didn't care for the song's festive tempo and levity taking place at a fictional mental institution. It's gotten more than 300,000 views, regardless.

The second video single returned Ray to the political comedy field after an extended hiatus of new material for that genre of entertainment. Prior to the release of "You Didn't Build That" a couple of months ago his last political comedy video arrived a year ago this month in the form of "If You Like Your Plan" (September 22, 2014). It's been seen by more than 120,000 people. "You Didn't Build That" has been seen by close to 50,000 people so far.

I stress that this isn't the heat of a political season, yet, and even though Obama can't run for a third term he nevertheless is going to play a major part in the 2016 election cycle by virtue of his policies being attached to whichever Democrat gets the nomination. If it's Joe Biden expect to see a lot of issues that defined the Obama-Biden Administration to be fair game during the campaign trail in 2016.

Even though Ray's foray into political entertainment came as a surprise and a shock to most people late in 2009 nearly all of the political music videos from him that have appeared on YouTube feature a comical presentation to keep the mood lighthearted even though, if you listen carefully, the lyrics are pointed and actually, serious, but masked behind a comical presentation on video. "You Didn't Build That", his current video single, takes a phrase from one of Obama's speeches and it's turned into a song about Obama's twisted attitude about American business.

Not all of Ray's political videos have been visually comical, though. A couple are deeply serious. In the latter category there's "God Save Arizona" (August 4, 2010) and last year's "Nero Fiddled" (October 10, 2014). The 2010 video's focus happened to be the enormous problem of illegal immigration along the Arizona-Mexico border...more specifically the lawsuit that former Attorney General, Eric Holder, issued against the State of Arizona as a result of their enforcement of their immigration laws.

The 2014 video focuses in on Obama's consistent misplaced priorities and his lack of strong leadership in face of real threats...like the real threat of global terrorism. It's a strong message criticizing Obama's Presidency. "If You Like Your Plan" and "Nero Fiddled", at the moment, are available only as video singles on YouTube.

Share these among your on-line friends if you hadn't done so already... "You Didn't Build That", "Nero Fiddled", and "If You Like Your Plan"...

Ray Stevens and the Spirit of '76, Part 11...

Happy 4th of July to all the fans of Ray Stevens! In April of 2011 a CD from Ray Stevens emerged and it immediately became a fan favorite. Spirit of '76 contains 11 recordings from Ray Stevens and each of them feature a topical and or political slant...some songs feature both. In the earliest years of the Obama Administration and the Tea Party movement it shouldn't be overlooked that our Ray Stevens happened to be one of the most vocal amongst the music acts. Criticizing the Obama Administration and embracing the ideals of the smaller Government Tea Party advocates had an impact in the 2010 midterm election cycle.

Combining topical humor, political commentary, and patriotism became the foundation for Spirit of '76. The project featured 5 songs that became music video hits on YouTube/social media...as such this could be interpreted as one of Ray's biggest successes if you factor in the amount of video popularity associated with the songs.

I purchased Spirit of '76 as an Mp3 in April of 2011. It remained an exclusive Mp3 release until the fall of 2011...it emerged in CD format at that point in time and so I purchased the CD counterpart, too. At the time of the CD's release only a couple of songs had become video hits and then throughout the rest of the year the remaining video releases soon emerged. If one happens to examine this era of Ray's career, in hindsight, it all appears perfectly timed but yet for those like myself we know that from day to day, week to week, month to month it was pretty much a roller coaster ride for as soon as you'd reach the height of a music video's initial popularity, it would reach a valley, and then when you're least expecting it the video would soar into  popularity once again. Given the unpredictable nature of topicality a music video featuring political commentary/humor and those that center on topical events are largely at the mercy of the collective news cycle. If Obama and one of his machinations seems to be dominating the news cycle then more than likely a video by Ray about Obama gets a boost in unique views. The topic of the environment/Green Energy comes and goes...and on this CD there's "Cap'n Trade the Pirate"...a song mixing pirate lore and Green Energy that should have been made into a music video but it wasn't.

The very first release from this CD turned out to be the third track, "God Save Arizona", on August 4, 2010! That particular song in music video form emerged in the fall of 2010 during the peak of the controversies surrounding illegal immigration and the State's court battles with the Federal Government. Issued as a music video exclusive it struck the same kind of chord that a previous video about illegal immigration from Ray Stevens did. At the time of the release of "God Save Arizona" there was no talk of it being part of any upcoming CD. So, then, once Spirit of '76 became available fans noticed that "God Save Arizona" appeared as track 3 and so it retro-actively became the CD's first video release. This ballad has gotten 1,053,472 unique views. For those that may not be aware, this video created controversy during it's first day of release and was taken off-line after it had obtained nearly 100,000 discoveries. The issue surrounding the video apparently resolved itself because not long afterward the video re-emerged but the previous views had been erased and so it's rather appropriate if you want to add at least a hundred thousand to the current tally.

The CD's opening track, "The Skies Just Ain't Friendly Anymore", became a video in the early part of 2011 and ironically it, at the time, was being promoted as the first release from Spirit of '76. This amusing song/video has to do with the TSA at the airport and the body scans. The video hit in February 2011 and to date it's gotten a little more than half a million unique views at 555,404.

As mentioned previously the music videos are like roller coasters and those numbers for the video didn't come all at once. The video seen it's release a little less than 2 months before the Spirit of '76 became available.

The biggest successes from the CD centered around Obama. Several weeks after the Mp3 of Spirit of '76 became available "Obama Budget Plan" became his next video release on April 25th. The video, as one can guess from the song's title, is about the Federal budget (or lack thereof). The song comically tells the story of a man that comes up with an idea to print money from his basement. He figures if it's perfectly fine for the Government to print money and rack up trillions of dollars in debt then it shouldn't be illegal or unethical for the tax payer to get in on the money printing business. Currently sitting at 3,869,283 unique views it's the biggest hit from the CD.

The second biggest video hit from Spirit of '76 comes in the form of "Mr. President - Mr. President", a video that seen it's social media debut on September 27, 2011. In this video Ray portrays a fictional reporter stationed at the White House "asking" Obama a series of questions. The visual hook is that a video snippet of Obama appears at a podium as if Ray's really asking him questions. The song highlights the reputation Obama has of mixed up priorities. To date that particular video has gotten 1,632,890 unique views.

The fifth release from the CD came along more than a year later on November 3, 2012. "Grandpa Voted Democrat" was certainly a surprise release. It's not a surprise that it eventually became a music video but considering that more than a year had passed from the release of the previous video from the CD it wouldn't have been out of the ordinary to assume 2011's "Mr President - Mr. President" to be the CD's final video single...yet Ray emerged just prior to Election Day 2012 with the voter fraud satire "Grandpa Voted Democrat" and to date it's gotten 637,364 unique views. It's the fifth and final release from Spirit of '76 and you can purchase your copy HERE if you want to add it to your Ray Stevens collection.

Ray Stevens and the Politics of Comedy...

It's been a rather quiet several weeks when it comes to activity from Ray Stevens. Well, I should re-state that it's been publicly quiet since he often is in the recording studio working on whatever it may be and then all of a sudden he emerges with a brand new music video or a brand new recording.

The planned Fox News appearance last month was canceled due to breaking news. Of course, that's why I didn't write a follow-up entry. I had written a blog entry promoting what was to be the upcoming appearance but the planned appearance, as I found out later, had been scrapped. There wasn't a mention of the cancellation on the air, though, so I was under the assumption that the appearance was still going to happen but had been pushed back to a later point in the show. Anyway, during a top of the hour commercial break I found out about the cancellation when I returned to the computer and saw commentary on one of Ray's social network sites alerting us to the canceled appearance. The alert came within a half an hour or so of the scheduled appearance and so if I had seen that message beforehand I wouldn't have been waiting for his appearance that entire previous hour. That experience taught me to take a glimpse at his Twitter and Facebook pages prior to any TV or radio appearance to see if there's been any sort of cancellation or not.

I think this may have been the third or fourth time within the last year (2012-2013) that he's had to cancel a national appearance due to breaking news of some kind or another. A few radio interviews on nationally syndicated programs were canceled "at the last minute" because of breaking news. This isn't to say everything he attempted during the last year resulted in cancellation it's just that those fairly recent abrupt cancellations were something I wasn't used to.

A couple of weeks ago he issued super brief video upload called Politically Speaking with the subject being the "Obama Budget Plan". The video consists of Ray delivering a political point of view that's all but 31 seconds long. I wish it would've been longer. The video commentary, I assume, will become an on-going series as a visual tie in with his book, Let's Get Political. The video closes with a photo of Ray that appeared on the book. Ray speaks a series of lines sandwiched between some video clips of "Obama Budget Plan". In case you hadn't seen it, you can watch it HERE. If there are to be future installments I hope Ray speaks a lot more than he did in the first one. "Obama Budget Plan", the music video, has a current view total of 2.4 million. To be more specific that's 2,439,468 unique views so far.

For those of you who may still have cassette tape devices but do not have a turntable, Ray's 1980 album Shriner's Convention, is available once more in cassette format. Of course, if you're like I am, you'll more than likely want a vinyl copy and a cassette copy. I came across a cassette version of this project at least 5 years ago, I think, and I purchased it. It's a rare item, in my opinion. The cassette versions of Ray's albums from the '70s and early '80s are an ultra rare find so if you come across one, and it's priced reasonably, by all means purchase it because chances are you'll never come across it again. I'm still looking forward to the day that his 1981 and 1982 albums show up for sale in either CD or Mp3 format. I won't hold my breath, of course, but it would still be great if those two albums were to see the light of day in a re-issue instead of having the material remained buried in the RCA vaults.

I've posted the picture of myself and the cassette version of Shriner's Convention before so I won't do it this time around but basically if you're a dedicated fan of Ray's and want something obscure then you definitely should take a look HERE.

Ray Stevens visits Fox News, June 1st...

Hello all...as the title of the blog entry indicates, Ray Stevens will be appearing on the Fox News Channel tomorrow, June 1st. The appearance is scheduled to take place at some point during the 12pm EST hour on the America's News Headquarters program. The news of the appearance was released in the latter half of Thursday and by the time I had returned to the computer it was well past 11pm and so I decided to make mention of the Saturday appearance this morning.

There is much more about this from Absolute Publicity, the company that represents Ray.

His appearance tomorrow, as you'll read about in the link, deals with the various politically driven music videos he's issued on You Tube since December 2009. The unique view totals, according to the news release, have eclipsed 20,000,000. The accomplishment of this is noteworthy when you consider that the political music videos are seen as topical...but conventional wisdom would have you believe that anything topical has a short shelf life and therefore becomes irrelevant once the topic at hand loses priority to something else. The fact remains that Ray's "topical" music videos continue to attract views, clicks, and shares to this day and I share my opinion as to why this is happening further down the blog. While briefly looking through some of the tweets about Ray I saw links posted to "Obama Budget Plan" and I often find links to "Obama Nation" and "Throw the Bums Out!" too.

Often, political music in general are nostalgically placed in the late '60s/early '70s time frame. Also true is the fact that most artists who perform politically driven songs, for the most part, are politically liberal and therefore their music is skewed to please a liberal audience. Also true is most news outlets, both on television and on-line, are more likely to embrace political songs that cater to a liberal message of some kind.

Ray Stevens, who for some came out of nowhere in 2009, is one of the few artists that have broken through in a big way over the last several years with political music videos promoting the Tea Party, a smaller Government, and fiscal responsibility. These political issues aren't 'topical'...they're mainstays of a political message. The names of politicians certainly change but rarely do their methods and goals change. Therefore, in my opinion, Ray's political songs will be able to continue to entertain hundreds of thousands of people for months and years....which is exactly what's taking place now.

Ray Stevens and the politics of Humor...

I was debating whether or not to call this blog entry Ray Stevens and the politics of Humor or Ray Stevens and the humor of Politics. I decided to go with the former rather than the latter because I don't particularly find politics to be funny...but there are many ways to find humor within politics and that's what Ray's been doing the last three years. It all started in late November 2009 with the release of "We The People", a song that criticized the ObamaCare bill which hadn't been signed into law at that point. A music video emerged soon after in December 2009 on You Tube...and from that point forward Ray's mostly been issuing politically oriented music and videos. A 2010 CD/Mp3 release, We The People, arrived in the summer of 2010. Several music videos were put together from songs on the 2010 project...a project that features 22 songs.

Earlier this year Ray issued a book titled Let's Get Political which features political essays written by both Ray and his songwriter/business associate, Buddy Kalb. The book also contains the lyrics to all the songs on both his 2010 and 2011 projects. Unfortunately the book was never publicized too heavily and is mostly known to those who either visit this blog on a frequent basis or visit Ray's web-store and are familiar with their items. It isn't a book in the traditional sense where there's hundreds or thousands of pages and a million chapters...it's much like a standard 75-80 page paperback book one might pick up and read in one sitting in the waiting room at a hospital or in the lobby of an airport. The book's pages aren't numbered, though. His latest release, "Grandpa Voted Democrat", tells the story of how collecting the names of people no longer living were being used in numerous voter fraud scandals. If one looks at the song's title you'd think it would be a song about how a grandfather's staunch political views but when you hear the song you'll learn about this bizarre chain of events that saw a grandfather "vote" Democrat.

The Grandpa Voted Democrat Mp3 is available at Ray's web-store for 99 cents. As I mentioned in a previous blog entry, the song comes from Spirit of '76 and it, too, can also be purchased in Mp3 format for those who don't want to have a CD copy. The songs from the 2011 CD that hadn't been made into music videos are: "Mi Casa Su Casa", "Cap'n Trade the Pirate", "News Machine", "November Storm", and "New Normal". The CD has 11 songs and so, of course, that means 6 of the 11 have been released on-line as music videos: "God Save Arizona", "The Skies Just Ain't Friendly Anymore", "Obama Budget Plan", "Mr. President - Mr. President", "Obama Nation", and the just released "Grandpa Voted Democrat".

Ray Stevens: Obama Nation, Part 18...

In a pick-up of 15,406 on-line views, "Obama Nation" by Ray Stevens currently sits with 607,639 views. I saw that the video vaulted past the 600,000 mark on Monday evening but I didn't create a blog entry about it and afterward I had my computer off until this morning due to storms that were passing through. In Part 17 of this blog series the video had obtained by that time 592,233 unique views and as mentioned the video received more than 15,000 additional views bringing it to it's current total of 607,639.

I'll only say a couple of things about the perceived mini-controversy surrounding the Romney video that liberal bloggers are having a feast with...the video is irrelevant. It's more or less an addition to a long list of distraction stories being pushed to keep the focus away from Obama's dismal failures. It's as simple as that. The liberals will probably come up with a different distraction story a little more than a month from now when the 2012 Election is a week or so away so be ready for it.

Am I the only one that can see through this liberal-created story for what it is?

Since I had my computer off for a day and a half I was not aware until this morning that Ray had an interview with the radio duo, Rick and Bubba, about The Encyclopedia of Recorded Comedy Music. The interview took place this morning at 9:30am but it wasn't specific if that was Central or Eastern time. I work nights and was asleep at that time and there hadn't been any podcast made available. I also saw a post on Twitter that Ray had a radio interview on a station in Effingham, Illinois with their morning program.

CONCERT ALERT!!! CONCERT ALERT!!!

Ray Stevens will be appearing in Shipshewana, Indiana on September 21st and in Effingham, Illinois on September 22nd.

Those in the area take advantage of seeing the music entertainment legend. His concerts are highly entertaining and engaging, too.

Ray Stevens: Obama Nation, Part 17...

During the last several days, the Ray Stevens "Obama Nation" music video's obtained more than 11,000 additional views. In part 16 of this series I mentioned that the view total was sitting at 580,730. Right now it's sitting at 592,233! It's inching closer to the 600,000 level. His previous video, "Mr. President - Mr. President", has 673,695 total views at the moment. That particular music video was released almost 1 year ago while "Obama Nation", released a couple of months ago, is nearing that 600,000 mark at a much more quicker rate. The previous video/song is just as great but the anticipation and build up of the 2012 Presidential election has apparently helped the current video close in on the 600,000 mark in a much shorter time span.

In a couple of weeks are the Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates: Romney vs. Obama, Ryan vs. Biden. I may or may not watch...as I've written before in other blog entries I can't stomach Obama's lies, his arrogance, and his condescending demeanor...which will obviously be on full display during those debates. I often associate an Obama speech with the anticipation of root canal surgery.

Biden is full of himself, too, but not on the same level as Obama and I think Paul Ryan will run circles around Biden during their debate.

I've spotlighted this particular Ray Stevens interview before but I've decided to post a link to it again because it's so informative, in my opinion, and it's one of those rare interviews with a recording artist where the artist comes off as the top priority and is treated with respect. There are various kinds of interviews with various objectives and most of the time the 'celebrity interview' nowadays comes off more like a gossipy tabloid-style tell-all than a serious, let's stick to business, interview. One such serious interview was conducted by a writer named Jeremy Roberts and it took place in 2011 in the months following the April release of Spirit of '76. You can read the full interview/write-up HERE.

Ray Stevens: Obama Nation, Part 15...

Good Friday morning!! The numbers for "Obama Nation" this morning see it at 575,199 on-line views. I assume a lot of the Ray Stevens fans are aware of Joe South's death a few days ago. In case you hadn't heard about it, South passed away at the age of 72 in Atlanta, Georgia. Long-time fans or those who've studied Ray's career should already know the connection between the two. South was among a handful of teenagers and young adults who came up in the business, all around the mid and late '50s time frame, with a helping hand from Bill Lowery. Georgia music superstars from that era included the one and only Ray Stevens of course...but there was Jerry Reed, Billy Joe Royal, Tommy Roe, and Joe South. Each of those artists found stardom in the pop and or country music formats as they grew into adulthood. The future stardom arose mostly from the artists being singer/songwriters as well as top-notch session musicians. Freddy Weller emerged to stardom in the mid/late '60s as a session musician and later, artist, and he definitely has ties to Georgia as well.

In the mid '60s Ray Stevens covered a few Joe South songs: 1965's "Party People" and 1966's "Devil May Care". Ray would later cover two more Joe South compositions: "Games People Play" in 1969 and "Walk a Mile In My Shoes" in 1970.

In another topic...one that's tied to the name of this blog entry...

Apparently the name of the re-election game this year is self-pity and the yearning for a sympathy vote. In my opinion, the Obama political machine has decided to highlight the President's failings in a strategy that calls for ~honesty~ about the failed policies and the broken promises over the last 3+ years...promises to unite a nation and restore America to greatness. Instead, what we've gotten is division amongst the public and tightfisted, thuggish edicts and mandates from an over sized Government. Add to that the huge unemployment numbers and the debt and deficit that's accumulated since 2009...I could go on and on as many of you readers are more than familiar and aware. The icing on the cake...or the sickest part of this Obama strategy...is that they seriously believe that the country is going to give them 4 more years all in the name of sympathy. Bill Clinton said as much a few days ago during the Democrat get together...in his speech he stated that Obama deserves 4 more years. Such a statement isn't that surprising coming from a fellow Democrat...but it just doesn't mesh with reality and the facts. Obama doesn't deserve another 4 years. The Democrat party has basically dissolved into a throng of people who cater to special interests rather than cater to the good of the country and the people as a whole. They vilify anyone and everything that doesn't adhere to their standards and they pander to special interest groups at the drop of a hat.

The people who attended the Democrat get together and experienced the train wreck firsthand...well, they're not the ones that put Obama in the White House in the first place. The Independents are who sided with the liberals in 2008 and voted for Obama...but fast-forward to 2012...I really don't believe the Independent voters are going to fall in line and rush to support Obama a second time...so, yeah, the crowds at the Democrat convention were loud and characteristically obnoxious once the likes of Bill Clinton and Obama spoke but the fact is Obama needs the Independent voters and I'm not seeing any evidence that shows Independents are falling over themselves for an Obama second term. Obama has a record...something he did not have in 2008. It's incredibly naive and egotistical in some ways if Obama thinks that the voters are going to turn from the facts and simply re-elect him out of sympathy.

The mainstream media can spin it anyway they want...the people who attended the convention are dyed in the wool liberals and progressives...it's no surprise that they'd be cheering and on the edge of their seats.

Ray Stevens in Concert...

A new concert date has recently been added to the Ray Stevens tour schedule. He'll appear at the Effingham Performance Center in Effingham, Illinois on September 22, 2012 at 8pm. There is no indication, for those who live in nearby states, of whether that concert time is in the Central or Eastern time zone and so for those in Effingham, Illinois but especially those who may have time zone questions make sure to find that out, of course...you don't want to show up an hour late if you happen to live in the Eastern time zone.

This is a concert, as mentioned, that was recently added. This is on the heels of his 2 concert stop on September 21st in Shipshewana, Indiana at the Blue Gate Theater.

On September 29th he'll be in Renfro Valley, Kentucky.

His first 'concerts' of October will be 2 performance segments at The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee on October 6th. The Opry appearances aren't conventional "concerts" for those unaware. The Opry's radio format is broken into 30 minute segments, each hosted by a different Opry member.

Sometimes they have two 15 minute segments within a half hour, each hosted by a different Opry member and a designated sponsor. Typically the host of the segment will open with a song and then do some patter with the announcer or a band member...then comes a commercial read by the announcer. Afterward the first singer of the segment comes out and does 1 or 2 songs depending on their length. After some more commercials, the host brings out a second performer...sometimes it'll be another Opry member and sometimes it'll be a guest. If it's a guest, particularly a currently popular guest, he/she will often be allowed as many as 4 songs to perform. If the guest is moderately popular he/she could still be able to perform a few of their biggest or best-known recordings.

Usually anytime Ray appears at the Opry they turn over most of a half hour segment to him perhaps due to his guest status or the fact that he draws a strong fan base of enthusiastic followers/fans and the Opry personnel don't want to disappoint those who may have traveled a good ways to see him...perhaps it's a combination of both.

Ray is one of the few guests at the Grand Ole Opry who get nearly a complete half hour...usually this kind of treatment is reserved to Opry members that often don't get the opportunity to appear that much during a calendar year (results of a demanding touring schedule more than likely). In the various guest spots that Ray has appeared on at the Opry he's performed mostly the songs that have been linked to him for many years: "Everything Is Beautiful", "It's Me Again, Margaret", "The Streak", "Mississippi Squirrel Revival", and "Misty". An appearance during a Halloween themed segment a few years ago had him performing the funny but seldom if ever performed, "Booger Man" (a song from his 1988 album).

After the Opry appearances on October 6th, Ray Stevens heads off to New Mexico for an October 13th concert in Mescalero at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino. You can read more about that appearance Here.

You can get all the information about these concerts and several others by visiting the Events section of the Ray Stevens web-site.

Ray Stevens: Obama Nation, Part 8...

Here we are...an early Sunday morning on August 12, 2012...looking at the numbers for "Obama Nation" I see that it's gained more than 60,000 additional views since my previous blog entry. The total number of views as of now are 372,579! The "Obama Nation" Mp3 can be purchased Here.

The song comes from Ray's album, We The People, which to date has gotten 26 reviews on Amazon...23 of those reviews give the project 4 stars or better. 20 of those 23 gave the project 5 stars. This leaves us with a difference of 3. One customer gave the project 3 stars while 2 customers rated it a 1 star.

Polarizing responses are quite commonplace when it comes to projects with a political overtone. Those who love the messages being championed and praised in the songs are going to love the project while those of an opposing point of view are going to trash and rip apart the songs and the artist.

The video's gotten more than 300 comments...and it's sad but true that there's plenty of people who still rush to Obama's defense in spite of everything that's went on since January 2009. Those people, for a lack of a better word, are mostly ignorant about the things the President has done. If not ignorance then it's total agreement with the policies of Obama, or, people simply don't care how the President wants to run the country...and that's more worse.

In other news, this is the day after the announcement was made by Mitt Romney that his running mate will be Paul Ryan.

I, like a lot of people, applaud the decision...for some people the choice came out of left field but for a lot of other people it makes perfect sense. I was watching, on and off, the coverage on Fox News most of yesterday afternoon and evening and couldn't believe the things I was hearing from the Democrat personalities...for they were setting up a storyline for the next three months to focus on non-issues that fail to really address the problems of the day.

Obama speaks to the envious, jealous, and covetous...when he stated that he wants to level the playing field, what he really meant is he wants to take from the wealthy and take from the successful and give it to those who didn't earn it. He's also counting on people being ignorant about the relevant issues, specifically his failings and the all too true bloated expansion of the Federal Government, and he hopes to have voters focusing on class envy, societal values, and a Utopian fantasy land.

Now with the announcement of Paul Ryan as a running mate...a no-nonsense fiscal hawk...Romney has an even better chance of beating Obama in November. The economy will be a driving force in the 2012 election and who better to have as a running mate than a Congressman with a strong track record in economic legislation. In November voters will have a clear choice on how the country will be ran for the next four years. Do we want more of Obama/Biden and the overbearing Federal Government having their hands all over our personal lives or do we want a hands-off Federal Government that doesn't seek to control and dictate how we live our lives. I think the choice is pretty obvious...if you want the latter then vote Romney/Ryan in November. In all honesty I don't understand how anybody could want massive regulations and a controlling Federal Government...unless, as mentioned, some people out there are simply ignorant and don't understand what Obama's really doing and how the personal liberties we all have are threatened by his Administration.

"Obama Nation" speaks to this...watch it, listen to it, and enjoy it.
