Ray Stevens and Loretta Lynn...

Loretta and Ray; 1983
Hello to all the fans of Ray Stevens!! Earlier today Ray's social media sites featured a video clip from 1983 of a performance by Ray Stevens and Loretta Lynn. Today is Loretta's 88th birthday. Now, if you're not aware, Ray isn't an artist known for singing duets. On special occasions Ray will perform a duet or participate in a group performance but as far as being known for duet recordings it's next to non-existent. However, in 1983, Ray performed a duet with Loretta Lynn on the CMA Awards 25th Anniversary special. The two performed a medley of Patsy Cline hits. It was an interesting pairing and an unusual one, too. Ray had long been established within the pop music and country music circles as had Loretta...but the unusual pairing of Ray and Loretta reminds me of a punchline to a Jerry Clower story when he went into detail over how much of a country boy he happened to be but he ended his story by saying, and I'm paraphrasing: "...but, folks, let me tell ya, compared to Loretta Lynn I'd be called a city slicker".

Last year Loretta made a rare public appearance in which she attended a concert at the Ray Stevens CabaRay showroom. She and her family/friends sat in the Owen Bradley booth. If you hadn't been to the showroom prior to the COVID-19 pandemic or haven't looked at the interior, available for viewing on-line, there are several corner booths named for legendary record producers. Owen was Loretta's long-time record producer.
