Ray Stevens and the Spirit of '76, Part 5...

Welcome to July!! Closing out the month of June we had an additional interview from Ray Stevens hit the internet. Yesterday, June 30, an interview on the Taste of Country web-site appeared and it's chock full of information about Ray's current happenings. You can read the whole interview here.

In a previous blog entry I made mention of an interview, broken into 3 parts, that was conducted by Jeremy Roberts at examiner.com. That interview, for those who missed my earlier blog entry, can be found here.

(Note: The second and third parts of the interview are linked underneath part one!)

The one conducted by Jeremy Roberts, in the 3 parts, opens the door on a lot of Ray's biggest hit songs and along the way Ray gives his thoughts and opinions of his hit songs and his career overall. Each set of interviews are distinct and amazingly there's no over-lapping...and a lot of that is credited to the fact that each interview has a unique flavor.

The newest one is all about his current CD, the Spirit of '76, while the previous one is designed to shine the light on as well as examine the sad but true fact that Ray Stevens hasn't been elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame yet. This remains baffling to a lot of us Ray Stevens fans...lately the Hall of Fame has eased up on it's once strict rules of eligibility and within the last several years contemporary artists have made their way into the Hall of Fame. One day it should be Ray's turn! He's a jack-of-all-trades in the recording studio. He's a singer/songwriter/producer/arranger/musician/song publisher/comedian/music video magnate...an all around entertainer if you ask me.

I heard on the radio this morning that today marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of Court TV. Ray released "The People's Court" as a single in 1986...it spoofed the well-known court show hosted then by Judge Wapner. Coincidentally 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of this single. It can be found on Ray's 1986 comedy album, Surely You Joust. When listening to the song you can visualize everything crystal clear...we can imagine Ray in a yellow Cat hat (for example) calling up the Judge and complaining about domestic issues. It would have made a funny music video...and it still could...if he ever decides to re-visit the song. According to the songwriter credits it was written by Buddy Kalb, David Slater, and Jack White.
