Hello all Ray Stevens fans...on this finally Friday! On August 1st I composed a blog entry focusing on Ray's 4-CD box set, Iconic Songs of the 20th Century, appearing on Amazon's Top-100 New Releases list. It's been appearing in the CD's and Vinyl category/Country music department. The box set continues to appear on that particular Top-100 list at Amazon. I've been periodically keeping track of it's rankings. Today I looked on another New Releases list...this one being the Soundtracks category. Why? Well, on the main product page for the 4-CD box set it lists that it's among the titles in the Soundtracks category. So, armed with that information, I took a look at the CD's and Vinyl category/Soundtracks department of Amazon and seen Iconic Songs of the 20th Century among the Top-100 on that list, too. The Soundtracks chart is typically built around soundtracks from movies or music from television programs...but it's obvious why Amazon would place the 4-CD box set in that category. The complete title of the 4-CD box set is Iconic Songs of the 20th Century: The Soundtrack of Our Lives. I don't type out the complete title of album releases or single releases if they happen to be lengthy. I feel the fans and the public in general will be able to find the music without my having to type out an entire album or song title. Anyway, given that the word, soundtrack, happens to be part of the album title Amazon has placed it in the Soundtracks department as well. I don't know how long it's been ranked on that specific Top-100 list since I never thought to look there prior to today.
The 4-CD box set began appearing on Amazon's Top-100 New Releases in the final days of July when Amazon was still showing that it was out of stock/unavailable. I wrote a blog entry pointing out how odd it seemed to be that an out of stock item, without even the ability to place an order, could appear among the best selling New Releases. The box set then fell off the Top-100 but returned on August 1st. Ever since August 1st Iconic Songs of the 20th Century has ranked at various positions on the Top-100 New Releases (CD's and Vinyl/Country music). The rankings change every hour. This hour the 4-CD box set is ranked number 53. On the New Releases (CD's and Vinyl/Soundtracks) the ranking, as you can see in the above photo, is number 50. As of today the highest ranking the 4-CD box set has achieved on the CD's and Vinyl/Country music Top-100 New Releases is number 48. Also, since August 1st, Amazon has supplied the product page with an order option. I'm baffled as to why the box set wasn't available for purchase there on release day...there's never really been any sort of explanation given...but that's unimportant at the moment considering they've been selling it since August 1st. The box set's been available for purchase, since release day, on Ray's website and on the Curb Records website. In blog entries past I've given links to each of those stores. Here's a link to Ray's WEBSTORE
The reason I've been taking notes on it's presence on Amazon is because a general audience shops on Amazon...meaning that the site reaches people who are outside of Ray's loyal fanbase. Traditionally speaking, keep in mind, music releases also need exposure to those outside of a fanbase so as to gain a broad range of potential consumers and so that's why albums and songs need to be available on websites like Amazon and that's why video gets uploaded on YouTube on a consistent basis. It's also a reminder as to why interviews on music-driven websites, radio interviews, television, and write-up's are still important advertising tools even in the digital age.
Ray's music is available on all the major digital platforms...he recently uploaded a couple of amusing video clips advertising that fact. The appetite for content in the digital age is enormous...long gone are the days where albums and songs have the luxury of building momentum. It can still happen...but it's rare. A single release in the digital age almost immediately reaches it's peak...since it's available for purchase or streaming immediately...a record company doesn't have to wait around for a radio station to do "market research" or, for an artist, you no longer have to wonder or care if a program director wants to add your song to their playlist or if some radio consultant out there has any sort of bias against you and therefore is actively undermining your career, etc. You, as a recording artist, can put your music on the internet and usually get almost instant exposure and reaction.
So, as you can see, there's a lot of advantages that recording artists have with releasing music directly to the consumer...but still, with all of that advantage of cutting out the burdensome anxiety of being on the good side of a radio programmer/radio personality, or, wondering if they'll add your latest song to a playlist, any recording artist should always want to reach outside their fanbase...if only to let a general audience know that you've got some new recordings available. Ray Stevens has always done this in my opinion. He'll often give interviews on satellite radio, on traditional radio, or an interview will pop up somewhere in written form and they'll sometimes be on websites where you'd not think the name, Ray Stevens, would be too familiar but yet he's always making attempts at reaching people outside his loyal fanbase. Ray's broad appeal is demonstrated even today...just look at Amazon and how they choose to categorize his music. Iconic Songs of the 20th Century, for example, among the Top-100 New Releases in the Soundtracks department...but considering the types of recordings that are abundant on the 4-CD box set it could very easily have a place among the category of Traditional Vocalists/Pop but it's not categorized as such on Amazon...yet!
