Ray Stevens: The Willard Scott comedy Song...

It's me again, Ray Stevens fans!! I was planning on putting this kind of a blog entry together at a later time today or sometime tomorrow but I decided to just go ahead and write it now since I'm already on my computer. I learned the news, within the last hour or so, that Willard Scott passed away (March 7, 1934 - September 4, 2021).

Why am I discussing this in a Ray Stevens blog entry? If you look at the title of this blog entry you'll discover, in case you didn't know, that Ray recorded a comedy song about Willard Scott a number of years ago. The song isn't offensive or mean-spirited...but it uses irony and exaggeration to create a hilarious scenario. The song, "Cool Down Willard", originally appeared on the 1987 Ray Stevens comedy album, Crackin' Up. From the pen of Buddy Kalb the song details a household of women who've fallen in love with the Today Show weatherman. In the song Ray sings about how the wife, grandmother, and aunt have stopped daily activity due to their constant swooning and drooling over Willard. Ray tells us that the wife won't clean or cook because she's on the telephone all day talking about Willard and fawning over the clothes he wears, the flower in his lapel, and the wavy hairstyle in his toupee. Ray delivers a vocal impression of a grandmother who must be 100 years or older...given that Ray informs us that she hadn't been the same since Willard mentioned her birthday on national television.

Willard Scott began doing weather reports on The Today Show beginning in 1980...the birthday greetings began in 1983. When "Cool Down Willard" was recorded in 1987 Willard Scott had become a massively popular personality in spite of lacking all of the so-called physical requirements. He had a downhome, folksy demeanor that had widespread appeal and he had some kind of magnetism or some sort of emotional connection to women, in particular, which was exaggerated in Ray's comedy song. Some elitists in the media were turned off by his folksy, less than urbane demeanor and I'm sure it baffled them as to how he became the most popular cast-member on The Today Show for more than 10 years. In the minds of elitists they see 'folksy and downhome' as 'dumb and ignorant'. Willard Scott was more than a television weather personality, though. He was an entertainer at heart. He had a very lengthy radio career in the Washington, D.C. area as one half of the duo, The Joy Boys. Willard often starred in local children's shows and played the Washington, D.C. area's Bozo the Clown for several years. Willard created the character, Ronald McDonald, and played the character in early television commercials. He accomplished these things several decades before stepping in front of the national spotlight in 1980 on The Today Show

When you listen to "Cool Down Willard" keep in mind that Willard didn't take himself seriously. I believe Ray actually performed this song on the set of The Today Show. I can't confirm that, though. I saw it in passing while reading commentary on the internet concerning this song. I assume that had Ray performed this on the set of The Today Show there would be footage of it somewhere, or photos from the appearance, and it would've emerged online years ago. "Cool Down Willard" wasn't released as an A-side single in 1987. Instead it was the B-side of "Would Jesus Wear a Rolex?".

Ray uploaded the audio clip of "Cool Down Willard" onto YouTube back on January 13, 2021. The play count for the audio clip is 7,616 as of this writing. There have been a couple of people sharing the audio clip on social media. I think it's the only song about Willard Scott?? Anyway, mainly because of that, there may be a surge in YouTube plays for this song in the hours to come as more people learn of Willard Scott passing away.
