Hello fans of Ray Stevens!! Today the social media of Ray Stevens uploaded a video of Jeff Bates singing "Sleepin' In" from an episode of CabaRay Nashville. Jeff Bates guest starred on Episode 9, Season 1 and shared the episode with John Conlee. It is one of the few episodes of Ray's television series in which two guests appear. The two guests didn't share the same camera time, though. It was evenly split...John Conlee appeared in a segment with Ray and in a separate segment Jeff Bates appeared with Ray. In each segment there was an interview and a performance by the guest. In the video clip below you'll hear Ray mention a Christmas song he recently recorded which Jeff Bates had a hand in writing. The song Ray is referring to is "Mary and Joseph and the Baby and Me".
"Sleepin' In", the song Jeff sings in this video clip, happens to be a song on one of Jeff's albums...the one titled Me and Conway. When Jeff emerged on the music scene as a recording artist in 2002 he made headlines with a recording called "The Love Song". Music reporters and some historians compared his vocalizations to the late Conway Twitty and it's easy to see how they arrived at their conclusions when hearing Jeff sing that particular song. In other recordings Jeff's voice was compared to another country singer, Trace Adkins. So, it's as if Jeff's natural voice is similar to Trace Adkins but the phrasing of words is similar to Conway...anyway, Jeff's Me and Conway album contains original songs alternating with his renditions of Conway songs. "Sleepin' In" is one of those original songs from that tribute album. Jeff delivers the Conway-like phrasing and even throws in a growl or two...
