Well, hello all once again!! Did you all happen to catch Ray Stevens on Larry's Country Diner? I'm sure a lot of people missed the appearance...why? The upcoming appearance wasn't advertised but during the 8pm airing on a local PBS station of Ray Stevens CabaRay Nashville I happened to open up the on-screen guide to see what all was on television that night and I checked RFD-TV and seen that on Larry's Country Diner the guest was going to be Ray Stevens!! The Saturday night episode is always a repeat of the previous Thursday night episode. That means Ray's episode originally aired this past Thursday (May 7th) to no fanfare or publicity...not even a mention of it on Ray or Larry's social media pages. If I had known of it's May 7th air-date I would've given it some attention on this fan created blog page and would've watched it Thursday night.
Anyway, just by pure luck I was able to see the episode with Ray Stevens last night at 11pm. The episodes of Larry's show are being shot in remote locations due to the virus and the cast and guests appear on the television screen in squares...imagine a cross between The Brady Bunch and Hollywood Squares. Ray happened to be in the 'center square' which, I'm assuming, is reserved for the special guest that week while the regulars appear in random squares in each episode. In doing some research about this episode prior to writing this blog entry I came across a YouTube video clip affiliated with one of the show's sponsors, Boot Daddy. In the May 7th video clip they show several shots of the cast/guest in squares and I saved one of those images. I also saved a few images of Ray...but in the clip he doesn't speak because it's a segment for the sponsor and so the spokesmen and Larry control the conversation in that clip. These unique episodes are referred to as the quarantine edition of Larry's Country Diner.
One of the first things Larry did in this episode is he recited a poem about a ballpoint pen...from the pen of Buddy Kalb. In some of Ray's scenes he has on a mask and gloves...but we're soon to learn that it's part of a visual as he performs a brand new song about COVID-19 from the ballpoint pen of Buddy Kalb. Afterward Ray speaks of the virus and mentions that he has no idea when the CabaRay will receive clearance to re-open but speaks of an upcoming box set titled Musical Highlights of the 20th Century. He didn't go into a lot of detail but he did point out the name of the box set twice and he sang a couple of songs that are in it. The first is his rendition and arrangement of "Your Cheatin' Heart". Whenever you see this episode you'll notice a sync glitch midway through his performance...it's one of the obvious downsides to this type of recording...a delay in the playback for whatever reason can throw off synchronization even if the delay is a fraction of a second. The sync issue cleared itself up once the performance was over and the screen returned to the wide shot of everyone in their 'square'.
Ray's second performance of the episode is his intentionally slow "I Can't Help It If I'm Still in Love with You". At first he began singing "Your Cheatin' Heart"...but corrected himself...and afterward he remarked that he knows it won't be edited out because the show's motto is "the camera's keep rolling and we don't care"...a reference to the show's reputation for airing bloopers and mistakes. The arrangements for the two Hank Williams classics are big-band/jazz/pop...and one of the songs on the box set will be his take on "MacArthur Park". He didn't perform it but Larry made mention of it. Larry mentions of the back-up singers for Ray Charles being known as the Raylettes. Larry asks Ray what the name of his back-up singers are...they're The Hussies. The name, of course, came from "The Streak". Ray closed the episode performing his bluegrass rendition of "Oh, Pretty Woman"...it's not known if that's going to be on the box set or not.
Ray has name dropped several titles for upcoming CD's over the years and with the announcement of the box set, Musical Highlights of the 20th Century, it could be possible that those individual CD's will be part of this large box set. Melancholy Fescue and Slow Dance are a couple of CD titles that Ray's made mention of for a number of years. In fact, his music video for "Unchained Melody", that's one of the songs that's suppose to be in the Melancholy Fesue project. Ray mentioned the name of the box set twice during his appearance and given that an official title for the box set's now been revealed there's perhaps a possibility it could see a release before month's end. Wouldn't that be nice?? I'll definitely be on the lookout for this box set!!!
