Ray Stevens: The Animated Music Videos...

If you've been a fan of Ray Stevens for more than ten years or your only knowledge of him is what you've come across on video hosting sites then you're probably familiar with a series of limited animation music videos that he released. The computerized limited animation was put together by Randy Cullers...a name you should be familiar with if you pay attention to various illustrated portraits of Ray through the years. The artwork is usually credited to Randy. Ray began inserting animated elements into some of his music videos beginning with a topical music videos in 2002: "Osama Yo' Mama". Eventually this music video was followed up with what I'd call an experimental project the following year titled Cartoon Video Collection. The project contains six music videos combining live-action Ray Stevens performing in front of animated backgrounds.

The 2003 release contains: "Bridget the Midget the Queen of the Blues", "Deerslayer", "Erik the Awful", "Gone for Good", "Hang Up and Drive", and "Osama Yo' Mama".

A completely animated music video of "Power Tools" appeared on a 2-disc DVD release titled The Complete Comedy Video Collection from Curb Records in 2004. However, there are two pressings of this title. The pressing I have was distributed by Curb Records and it contains "Power Tools" listed as track 9 on Disc 1 but in another pressing, from Ray's Clyde Records label, that music video's been replaced with "Santa Claus is Watching You". Also, in the version I have, both "Osama Yo' Mama" and "Hello Mama" are featured on Disc 2. The pressing by Clyde Records doesn't feature "Osama Yo' Mama".

In 2006 along came a couple of DVD releases from Curb Records. Gourmet Restaurant features 5 animated music videos: "This Ain't Exactly What I Had in Mind", "Barbeque", "Jeremiah Peabody's Green and Purple Pills", "Gourmet Restaurant", and "The Ballad of Cactus Pete and Lefty". The follow-up, Teenage Mutant Kung Fu Chickens, features an additional 5 animated music videos: "Can He Love You Half as Much as I?", "Harry the Hairy Ape", "Teenage Mutant Kung Fu Chickens", "Misty", and "Along Came Jones". As the caption below the photo states it's from 2011. I wrote a blog entry 9 years ago about Ray's music videos and included that image in the blog entry. I decided to bring it back and re-post it.

In 2008 a couple of compilation animated music video DVD collections were released. Cartoon Carnival, Volume One features the following 10 music videos: "Moonlight Special", "Gone for Good", "Along Came Jones", "Barbeque", "Smoky Mountain Rattlesnake Retreat", "The Ballad of Cactus Pete and Lefty", "Power Tools", "Can He Love You Half as Much as I?", "Deerslayer", and "Gourmet Restaurant". Eight of the ten music videos had previously been released. The brand new music video productions happened to be "Moonlight Special" and "Smoky Mountain Rattlesnake Retreat".

Cartoon Carnival, Volume Two features the following 10 music videos: "Hugo the Human Cannonball", "Hang Up and Drive", "This Ain't Exactly What I Had In Mind", "Teenage Mutant Kung Fu Chickens", "Bridget the Midget the Queen of the Blues", "The Camping Trip", "Harry the Hairy Ape", "Erik the Awful", "Jeremiah Peabody's Green and Purple Pills", and "Misty". Just like the other project this one also features eight previously released music videos and two brand new ones: "Hugo the Human Cannonball" and "The Camping Trip".

There is a live-action music video for "Can He Love You Half as Much as I?"...it was filmed in 1995 as part of his VHS movie, Get Serious!. Ray hadn't made another animated music video since the mid 2000s. He returned to all live action in 2009.
