Hello all...earlier this morning on several of the Ray Stevens social media sites there was posted a 1970 video clip of Ray performing a song called "Catchy Little Tune". The clip's been on YouTube since August 23, 2013 but it was brought back this morning on Facebook and Twitter. In the description that was posted with the video clip it noted that Ray wrote the song specifically for the television show and that it's never appeared on any album. When I first seen this video clip back in 2013 I had assumed that the song was something that had appeared on an album by another pop singer of the time period and that Ray was doing his version of it...I should have known it was a Ray Stevens original.
The incredible thing about the
performance is how Ray demonstrates that lyrics can be performed/adapted to all kinds of styles even though the music itself (in it's written
form) remains the same. All of those music styles blending together in
the final moments of that performance is fun to hear. It's an overall showcase for his under-rated music arranging
prowess. As fans of Ray Stevens we all know that he won a Grammy for his arrangement of "Misty"...but never forget that Ray arranges all of his songs. The 'produced and arranged by Ray Stevens' credit should be very familiar to those of you that have his albums. It would look strange to not see that credit on any of his albums.
