Hello all...back on July 6th I took note of the unique play total of "Gas" on YouTube. When I looked at the numbers it was sitting at 9,327 unique plays. It then moved up to 9,351 unique plays the following day. As of this writing the YouTube unique play count for "Gas" is 9,403. This is a pickup of 76 unique plays over the course of the last couple of days. As far as I know I made up the phrase 'unique play' because with an audio track you're playing/listening to the song...there's no music video or live-action or animation that you're watching. A unique view or 'unique play' is when a video/audio upload is accessed by an individual computer/smart phone and the view from that device is counted only once...meaning that repeated viewings of the same video or repeated plays of the same audio track aren't counted. 9,403 individual devices have accessed the audio track of "Gas", so far. If you hadn't heard this crazy novelty song take a listen below. If you've already listened to it elsewhere on the internet...listen to it again. It's very amusing and whimsical.
The frequent playing of the audio track on my computer isn't being added to the view totals...only the first play/view was captured. The reason YouTube doesn't count multiple plays from the same device is to prevent artificial view counts. When a video or audio receives 9,403 views that means 9,403 individual devices accessed the content. Since YouTube doesn't track repeated play from the same device it's next to impossible to figure out how many actual plays a video/audio track receives on YouTube since all of us play video and audio content of the same song more than once on our devices. I've listened to the "Gas" audio on YouTube more than a dozen times since it was uploaded last month...but only the first listen was counted. "Gas" is on Curb Records and will be part of a comedy album from Ray Stevens to be released in October. In a previous blog entry I was wondering if Ray would be riding the "Gas" song until October or if he'll be releasing something else from the upcoming album.
I have my own feeling that with the Iconic Songs of the 20th Century box set being released later this month they'll heavily promote that collection during the latter half of this month and all of August and into September...then, after Ray returns to putting on concerts at the CabaRay on September 4th, the focus will shift to the comedy album and the songs that will be on that project. That's just my own theory as to how the next several weeks and months play out...but anything can happen. You ordinarily want a new song out in the weeks prior to an album release...so that's my reasoning behind the assumption that it's possible Ray could unleash a new song onto the internet in September or early October prior to the comedy album's release.
