I didn't think I'd be able to but yes I found myself awake early this morning...waking up at 9:30am. I knew that Ray Stevens was going to be interviewed on Bill Cody's radio show this morning beginning at 10am Eastern time (9am Central). The brain works in many ways...it must've knew that I needed to be awake by a certain time. I went to the WSM radio webpage and began listening to the station. I heard Bill promote Ray's upcoming appearance and not too long after 10am this morning Bill had Ray Stevens on as a guest. The segment began with a playing of "Hoochie Coochie Dancer" from the new album, Ain't Nothin' Funny Anymore. I was listening to the interview and taking down notes. Bill began the interview discussing the CabaRay showroom. Ray was at the CabaRay while the interview was taking place and Ray spoke of it being back in business. He said that he'll be performing at the CabaRay on Saturday nights through the rest of the year...including an added Friday concert in December. Ray commented that the pandemic kept the showroom closed during 2020 and the first half of 2021 and so to fill all of that down time he kept busy in the recording studio which is at the CabaRay.
Ray spoke about the 4-CD box set he released a couple of months ago, Iconic Songs of the 20th Century, and said that there will be a Volume Two with just as many songs. Bill asked Ray what the first song ever released in his career...it was 1957's "Silver Bracelet". Bill's producer and co-host, Charlie Mattos, played a snippet of the song...which Ray, being modest as usual, declared how bad the song sounded. The topic then moved on to the Country Music Hall of Fame, which Ray became a member in 2019. Ray told of how he was surprised by the news and said that his election was kept secret and it was revealed to him in an unconventional way. He said that he was asked to show up at an event where he was to help identify people in recently discovered photographs for an upcoming news article. Ray said that once he got there he was informed that he was going to be one of the newest members of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Bill mentioned that the Class of 2019 included Brooks and Dunn as well as Jerry Bradley. Ray mentioned that he had known of Jerry Bradley for decades through Harold Bradley and Owen Bradley. Ray told the story of how Jerry was involved in the Shriner's Convention album and that Jerry had known of the artist who drew the art work for the album cover. The radio show airs on Circle TV and so I watched the last 10 minutes and seen Ray on camera from the CabaRay underneath the widescreen shot of the WSM radio studio that Bill, Charlie, and Megan were sitting in.
Bill's other on-air associate, Megan Alexander, added to the interview and said that anytime she sees a squirrel she thinks of Ray's recording, "Mississippi Squirrel Revival". She spoke about the first time she ever met Ray Stevens and it was on the set of a television series Ralph Emery was hosting. She didn't say whether it was Nashville Now or the local television show he hosted. The story she told was about Ray being a guest on an episode where a farmer was showing the viewers how to shear a sheep. Megan said that Ralph was nervous and in a near fit due to the handling of the sheep by the farmer...with Ralph worried about the sheep getting severely hurt or worse on television. This story led to the discussion of Ray's CabaRay Nashville television series. Ray said that he hopes to do more episodes of the show but stated that there's 79 episodes already available and in repeat cycle...giving the impression that there's no mad rush to begin production on brand new episodes...yet.
Bill made mention of "Coco Cabana Band" as it went into commercial. I thought it would be played on the show when the commercial break ended but "Misty" was aired. Ray told the origins of his recording of the song. Bill made mention that Ray will appear as a guest on the Grand Ole Opry next Tuesday October 12th. I made mention of that in a previous blog entry but I hadn't mentioned it again...appearances are always subject to change and I didn't want to over-promote the appearance and it end up being postponed. I don't know if they'll turn most of the half hour segment over to Ray during the guest appearance or not. As far as the interview with Bill Cody I don't know if it'll be archived or made available on Circle TV as an archive. If it becomes available as a Circle TV archive I'll do some screencaps.
