A couple of days ago (October 17th) was the birthdate of Gary Puckett. If you're familiar with 1960s pop music you should be familiar with him and his band. They billed themselves as Gary Puckett and The Union Gap. They wore replica uniforms of the Union Army while on stage and in their album cover photos. Union Gap happens to be an actual place in Washington State...near a town called Yakima where Gary was partially raised...he also attended school in Twin Falls, Idaho and graduated there in 1960. Later in the decade he formed a group called Gary and the Remarkables...and this group was eventually given a new name, Gary Puckett and The Union Gap.
The group, commercially, had a massive two year run of success, from November 1967 through early 1970, with 7 singles that hit the Top-50 portion of the pop singles chart (5 of them reaching the Top-10). Gary guest starred on an episode of the Ray Stevens CabaRay Nashville television show.
In the episode Gary spoke of the formation of The Union Gap band plus his earlier years with a group called The Outcasts. He spoke of going solo while utilizing The Union Gap name for his back-up group...but eventually the band's name was phased out and from that point forward he billed himself as Gary Puckett. He and The Union Gap's biggest recordings were "Woman, Woman", "Over You", "Lady Willpower", and "Young Girl". In 2019, on Gary's birthday, Ray uploaded a video of a brief interview of Gary and a performance of "Over You". Last year on Gary's birthday Ray uploaded video of "Woman, Woman" and this year, on Gary's birthday, Ray uploaded a video clip of Gary singing "Young Girl". All of those video uploads come from the same CabaRay Nashville episode and here's the footage of "Young Girl" by Gary Puckett...
